Happy September! 🌤️🍃 As the summer winds down and crisper mornings hint at the coming fall, PCD has many opportunities to get outside and enjoy the lovely weather as we care for local green spaces. This month there'll be ✨TWELVE (12) ✨stewardship events across Pierce County, each one a fantastic chance to build community and make a positive impact on our region's natural spaces. 🌲🦅🏞️🐟

These work parties focus on caring for and enhancing native vegetation to promote healthy, biodiverse wildlife habitats and ecosystems. Volunteer activities can include removing invasive plant species, spreading mulch, litter pickup, and planting native and pollinator-friendly plants. 🌿🐝 No experience is necessary and Pierce Conservation District provides all necessary tools and training for these family-friendly events.

The Washington Tree Farm Program is hosting their annual Fall Forestry Seminar, this year at Webster Nursery for Western WA (with hybrid option available).

You do not need to be affiliated with Tree Farm or own forestland specifically to attend. There will be a few presentations, including ones on working riparian buffers, wildlife, and hardwood management, as well as a walking tour of Webster Nursery's growing and processing areas. In-person registration for westside includes lunch and refreshments! Please dress appropriately for walking and be aware there is a flight of stairs to access the presentation space.

Join PCD and other local organizations in on the 9th annual collective day of action in support of our southern resident orcas! We'll have sites in Tacoma, Puyallup, Edgewood, and Orting so there are plenty of spaces to participate.⁠

Whether at one of our sites or at one of the dozens of regional events across Puget Sound, you can get involved by attending planting parties, collecting trash, expanding your green spaces at home, or simply chatting with your friends and family about our southern residents.⁠

Each year Tacoma Garden Club selects one or more community organization(s) to receive small grants based on submitted applications. ⁠

Mission: ⁠
- To stimulate a love of gardening ⁠
- To protect the quality of the environment ⁠
- To encourage civic improvement ⁠
- To support charitable, scientific, and educational activities in each of the above categories ⁠
⁠
Requirements: The qualifying application must meet the following criteria: Grant requests should relate to the above mission statement. Proposed projects must be within the boundary of Pierce County. Funds requested must be used by June 15 following their receipt. Maximum grant amount is $500.⁠
⁠
Past grants have funded fencing for community gardens, rain barrels, drip systems, brochures, garden tools, and educational activities. Eligible Applicants are an organization or entity including those such as nonprofits as defined by the state of Washington*, government agencies, private or public schools, hospitals, retirement centers, rehabilitation facilities and youth programs. ⁠

We're helping volunteers take care of TWO new habitat stewardship sites in Tacoma! 🌱 If you live near the Tacoma Dome or Wapato Hills, consider coming out for a weekend to get your hands dirty and leave a lasting impact. Taking care of local habitat helps out wildlife, pollinators, water quality, and human wellness. ⁠
