National Salvation Army Doughnut Day celebrate the brave work of The Salvation Army lassies who offered hope and encouragement on the front lines of World War 1. Today, the tradition continues to thank the generosity of the community and honor the veterans and active service members who continue to fight for freedoms around the world.
In 1917, The Salvation Army responded to a call for help from the U.S. soldiers fighting in France during World War 1. 250 Salvation Army volunteers traveled oversees to set up small huts near the front lines providing soldiers with supplies, clothing, writting letters to send home, a listening ear, and sweet treats.
Faced with the challenge of baking under difficult conditions, two Salvation Army officers came up with the idea of frying doughnuts. These simple yet delicious snacks quickly lifted the spirits of the troops becoming a symbol of comfort and care in the midst of war.
Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, The Salvation Army continued to make and distribute doughnuts, offering a sense of hope during the Great Depression.
In 1938, The Salvation Army in Chicago established the first National Doughnut Day, a tradition created to support those suffering during the Depression and to honor the legacy of those women who volunteered during the war.
Dwight D. Eisenhower later issued a national proclamation in 1954, giving broader federal recogniztion of the observance.
Today the donut remains a lasting symbol of the comfort and joy The Salvation Army provided to soldiers during World War 1.
National Donut Day is celebrated every year on the First Friday of June with Salvation Army locations across the country delivering donuts to veterans and those in need as part of their ongoing mission of service and compassion.
