700 Miles Through French Canada:
A Practical Guide to Freedom on Two Wheels with Ben Lord

This summer, Ben Lord cycled alone for 700 miles through Vermont, New York and Quebec. In this interactive presentation, Ben will share what he learned about life on two wheels and about himself. He'll break down the gear he took, the practicalities of food, water, lodging, language, and the hazards of the road, and leave you inspired to take to the open road.

Ben Lord is a science teacher, poet, podcaster, and YouTube star. He has been riding bikes since he was six and has not needed training wheels for most of that time. He lives in Putney where he habitually bites off more than he can chew.

Putney Library is located at 55 Main Street in Putney, VT. This program is free and open to the public.

Toni Ortner and Tim Mayo to Read at Putney Library
Tuesday, September 22nd at 6:30pm

Join us at the Putney Public Library on Tuesday, September 22nd at 6:30pm to hear the voices of two local poets, Tim Mayo and Toni Ornter, as they read for their new publications.

Tim Mayo has a fifth collection titled Muscle Memories of Love and Disaster published by Bainbridge Island Press. His book explores grief and the loss of loved ones, some recollections of early childhood, his work in a mental hospital, a near fatal accident, and finding love late in life. He recently retired from 15 years working at the Brattleboro Retreat and is one of the committee members of the Brattleboro Literary Festival He is a recipient of fellowships from the Vermont Studio Center. He received an MFA from the Bennington College Writing Seminars.

Toni Ortner has had thirty-five books published. In Letters to the Dead by Rockwood Press, Toni invites readers to consider what remains when names and forms disappear and how love continues beyond absence. Forthcoming books are Passing Through by Deerbrook Editions, Monarch in the Desert and The Door that Opens into Light by Dancing Girl Press. and then the Pandemic Journal by Inanna Press of Canada. Her website is toniotner.com where you can see her books and reviews and hear a sound recording. She lives in Vermont and hosts the Putney Library Writers Salon in winter on Zoom to introduce presses to readers in Vermont. She taught English courses at the University of Connecticut and Monroe College among many other colleges and universities.

Make It Move! Mini Sculptures Workshop with Visiting Artist Dawn Stetzel
Wednesday, Sept. 16th at 6:30pm
at Putney Public Library

Please register to join us for a “Motive Power Make-And-Take” with September In Situ Polyculture Artist-In-Residence, Dawn Stetzel. Make a motive power mechanism, an interactive sculptural piece to take home using a cork as a base (or battery and magnet), wire and drawing elements.

Explore simple mechanical engineering using art, science, and tinkering, and see low-tech energy experiments on display. Leave with a miniature piece that activates a tiny object, shape or visual element.

Tool use includes: tiny hand saw, wire clippers and sharp ice pick to poke holes. All supplies provided. Workshop geared for adults 16+— kids 11 and up may be accompanied by an adult.

Dawn Stetzel is an artist from the United States currently living on the southern coast of Washington State on the unceded land of the Chinook and Lower Chinook. Her performative sculptures interact with environments in the margins, where humans and nature rub together leaving a sometimes-messy residue.

Talk with Visiting Mahsa R Fard, September's In Situ Polyculture Artist-In-Residence

Mahsa R. Fard (b. Tehran, Iran) is a Brooklyn-based artist whose work explores memory, identity, and the emotional tension between private and public spaces, shaped by her experience as a woman growing up in Iran. Her paintings often depict solitary figures in intimate interiors or overgrown Persian gardens, accompanied by recurring women busts drawn from her personal sketches and quiet witnesses that carry layered histories.

Fard’s process blends planned composition with intuitive shifts. She often begins with source images that transform significantly through memory and emotion. Her use of color emerges instinctively, with tones like red and green carrying psychological and symbolic weight across her work.

She received her BFA in Art and Architecture from Azad University in Tehran in 2014 and her MFA from the Hoffberger School of Painting at Maryland Institute College of Art in 2019.

Location: Meet at the Forest for Learning Kiosk (Next to the Town
Swimming Pool, 172 Westminster Rd, Putney, VT 05346)

Join Rich Grumbine for a plant amble on the Forest for Learning
landscape. We will focus our attention and discussion on the field
and forest herbaceous plants of September, and the common trees and shrubs we encounter along the way. Plan to be out for 75 – 90
minutes. Dress for the weather and tick bite prevention.
