On 9/2/26 around 8:00pm, units responded to assist Southeast Lamar Fire with a vehicle fire, near the intersection of Hendrix Rd & Little Black Creek Rd. Southwest Lamar Fire personnel assisted by performing an aggressive initial attack, resulting in the fire being quickly brought under control. No injuries were reported.

Lamar County Schools’ Police Chief Tamica Hill said the uptick in traffic could give young drivers anxiety.

She believes long lines outside of school before supervision times may be the source of some of the traffic.

Senator Polk was a huge supporter of all things Lamar County. He was responsible for securing state funds so we could start construction of the fire training facility. Mississippi and Lamar County Fire services will miss him. We are praying for his family during this time.

The Senate and I have lost a close friend, confidant, and outstanding person in former Senator John Polk of Hattiesburg. We will always remember him for his unwavering dedication to Mississippi, his strong convictions, and his willingness to say what needed to be said even when it was difficult.

As chairman of the Senate Business and Financial Institutions Committee and vice chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, he was always a steady leader and a voice of reason.

We are prayerful for Mrs. Jan and his entire family during this difficult time.

Meet the Executive Board

The Mississippi Firefighters’ Association is proud to introduce Chief Kyle Hill, who serves as the Mississippi Fire Chiefs Association representative on the MFFA Executive Board.

Chief Hill currently serves as Fire Coordinator for Lamar County and Fire Chief of Northeast Lamar Fire Rescue, bringing nearly four decades of dedicated service to Mississippi’s fire service. Although he officially joined Northeast Lamar Fire Rescue in 1989, his passion for the fire service began much earlier—around 1976—while following his father around the Taylorsville Volunteer Fire Department.

Following the sudden line-of-duty death of Chief Mac McKay during a structure fire, Chief Hill was promoted to Assistant Chief in 1995. In 2000, he was appointed Fire Chief, a position he has faithfully held ever since. Under his leadership, Northeast Lamar Fire Rescue has experienced tremendous growth, including the construction of a new fire station, renovation of an existing station, expansion of the department’s fleet from two apparatus to eight, the addition of full-time and part-time firefighters, and an improvement in the department’s fire insurance classification from a Class 9 to a Class 6.

After retiring from Pearl River Community College in 2018, Chief Hill was selected by the Lamar County Board of Supervisors to serve as Lamar County Fire Coordinator in 2019. Since then, he has helped lead significant advancements throughout the county, including the development of a state-of-the-art fire training facility completed in 2023 and the restructuring of career firefighter payroll under the Fire Coordinator’s Office in 2024. These improvements have strengthened county-wide fire protection while increasing funding opportunities for local fire departments.

Chief Hill has also provided outstanding leadership at the state level. He previously served as Southeast Vice President of the Mississippi Fire Chiefs Association from 2000 to 2003 before being elected President of the Mississippi Fire Chiefs Association in 2022.

Chief Hill’s decades of leadership, commitment to firefighter training, and dedication to strengthening Mississippi’s fire service make him a valued member of the Mississippi Firefighters’ Association Executive Board.
