Months ago, Bri, one of our amazing Part Time Park Attendants (and also currently studying a med program at East Central University - GO TIGERS! 🐅) , asked about some padded vinyl mats mounted on plywood boards that have been collecting dust in one of our many storage areas here at Purcell Multipurpose Center. We were doing a walkthrough to talk about some areas for our park attendants to maintain and clean, and she pointed and asked "Why don't we put those up?" At that time, I didn't even know what they were, or what they looked like under the layers of dirt and grime. Bri, who has played basketball for YEARS, explained that they are gym mats that get mounted on the walls in basketball gyms to help prevent injury to players - and we all know we have a LOT of serious basketball players that meet at the Multi to play and practice at all hours of the day!

Our Park Attendant team got them all out, spent hours scrubbing and cleaning them off, and arranged them so we knew what they looked like. Our Maintenance Team then carefully measured and drilled into the cinderblock walls in our gym to install, screw, and glue them in just the right places, and they have been up for a few weeks now!

Don't they look amazing?!! They sure add character to our gym! None of us can remember them ever being hung on the walls - do any of YOU remember seeing them installed before? They even have our old city logo with the train depot!

It just goes to show what a difference ONE PERSON can make in speaking up, or asking a question. Because one person spoke up, all of our basketball players and gymnastics participants have a new layer of safety while playing and practicing at the Multi. Many thanks to Bri for making a great recommendation and getting the ball rolling, to our park attendants for cleaning, carrying, and prepping the mats, and to our park maintenance team who made it all happen, just like they always do when we need something done for Purcell Parks and Recreation.

We appreciate all of you! This project was a slam dunk! 🤣🏀😂🏀👏🏀

Just a reminder that we have a FREE adult aerobics class here at Purcell Multipurpose Center twice a week! 😍 They meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8:30am in our Large Banquet Room. Led by the fabulous Sandie Cook, this group is energetic, fun, and healthy and knows how to boogie down, grapevine, cha cha, and work up a sweat to the best music!

These classes alternate with our Tai Chi classes, led by Tamara Powell, that are held at 8:30am and 9:30am on Mondays and Wednesdays (and the occasional Friday when a Monday is on a holiday, like this upcoming Labor Day week), making for the perfect mix of cardio and recovery while gaining strength and balance! We'd love for you to join us and experience the and the power of community! All are welcome for both programs, you do NOT have to be a Purcell resident to join or participate! 🌺

Today is our FREE Friday Crafternoons Program at The City of Purcell Parks and Recreation's Multipurpose Center from 3pm-5pm, and we are all set up and ready for you to join us! :) All ages and all crafts are welcome - bring your own craft, or make one of ours! We even have blocks to entertain toddlers. ;) Take a look at some of the different projects our group has been working on to get some inspiration of your own! You've probably heard about the critical blood shortage that's been a recurring problem this summer as the need for blood increases, and donors are busy or traveling - will you join us Friday at Purcell Multipurpose Center to help us save lives? OBI Will be here from noon to 4pm on Friday, August 28, 2026. Our community partnership includes: First United Bank - Purcell , Purcell Parks , City of Purcell, Oklahoma, and Our Blood Institute. At our last blood drive in June, we had an outstanding turnout, and saved 51 LIVES through our incredible 19 DONORS! We'll have moon pies, moon stress ball squishies, and some really amazing moon-themed t-shirts for our donors while supplies last - AND a choice of theme park tickets!
