EVENT TO LIGHT UP PUNXSY’S HERITAGE SET FOR SAT. OCT. 11

As part of the 175th Anniversary of Punxsutawney’s incorporation as a borough, a luminary display and program on selected town founders will be held at the historic N. Findley Street Cemetery. Starting at 6:30PM on Saturday, October 11th, the event will be hosted by the NFSC Guild.
For what should prove to be a stirring experience, more than 350 luminary lights will be placed on all the known gravesites at the cemetery. As the sky begins to darken, with the luminaries in the background, Guild members in period costume will represent selected early settlers and town founders highlighting them with short stories of their lives and contributions in developing Punxsutawney. They will also give a brief update on plans to further develop the cemetery into community heritage park.
All are invited and welcome to attend at no cost but donations will be gratefully accepted. Attendees are each asked to bring a lawn or bag chair and some type of flashlight to use when exiting in the dark after the program. Parking is available along Clark Street and all should dress appropriately for the weather. If a cancelation is needed a rain date is planned for the following evening Oct. 12th at the same time.
The luminaries will be set out Saturday at 3:00PM. Volunteers are requested to join Guild members at the cemetery to assist. Luminary bags will be set at all the sites so you will need the ability to walk along the hillside.
This first cemetery of Punxsutawney has many of our original settlers and town founders interred there. The 175th Anniversary of the town that they were instrumental in developing out of the wilderness is a perfect time to honor them, enjoy the glowing luminaries and possibly learn some more about how Punxsutawney came to be.
The Guild can be supported by tax deductible gifts specified for the NFS Cemetery Fund through the Punxsutawney Area Community Foundation, Inc.
