The deadline to reserve your spot at our June General Membership Presentation is fast approaching!

A healthy housing market is essential to a thriving community and local economy, and this month's presentation, "Homeownership in Pullman: Strengthening Community, Workforce and Economic Opportunity," will explore that key idea.

During National Homeownership Month, Elizabeth Perez, Executive Director of the Washington Homeownership Resource Center, will share current housing trends impacting Washington communities and practical resources that help residents achieve and sustain homeownership. Topics will include both traditional and emerging pathways to homeownership, from down payment assistance and homebuyer education to affordable models such as community land trusts and co-ops, alongside housing counseling, foreclosure prevention protections, and recent legislative efforts aimed at increasing housing supply and affordability across the state. Attendees will leave with concrete information they can share with employees, clients, students, and community members, and a deeper understanding of how local business, nonprofit, university, and civic leaders can help expand pathways to homeownership and long-term community stability in Pullman.

This event also marks the Chamber's first presentation at the Pavilion at The Table.

Key details:

⏱️11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
🗓️ Tuesday, June 9
📍1260 NE Palouse Ridge Drive
The Pavilion at The Table

This evening, our team gathered to celebrate the retirement of Sergeant Greg Umbright!

From assisting with event coordination to directing the National Lentil Festival Grand Parade, Sergeant Umbright has been a longtime supporter and valued partner of the Pullman Chamber.

While we’re sad to see him step away from this role, we’re excited to see what the next chapter holds. And selfishly, we’re thrilled that he’ll be back with our team again this summer, resuming his role as NLF Parade Coordinator.

Congratulations and happy trails, Greg! 🎉

Before May draws to a close, we’re proud to shine the spotlight on yet another Chamber Member! P1FCU — a member-owned financial cooperative — has been serving the Palouse since 1938, and continues to grow with a strong, people-first focus and new Pullman location.

After the arrival of now-Branch Manager Allison Russell in 2022, P1FCU Pullman has implemented a community-oriented vision in its day-to-day operations. “I saw a need for community-minded people and leadership,” said Russell, discussing the opportunity to step into the role of branch manager. “We’re trying to saturate ourselves in the community,” Russell added.

Serving the community has been at the forefront of the company’s work in the past few years. In 2023, they transitioned out of the small Walmart location they had held since 2008 to a new stand-alone location on Fairmont Drive, providing clients with a more private and welcoming space where they could share their stories and focus on building real relationships to better achieve their financial goals.

That people-first approach is central to P1FCU’s core values or ROOTS: being relatable, original, willing to openly empower clients through education and mentorship, maintaining transparency and always demonstrating sincere gratitude in all interactions. Whether it’s offering competitive options like auto loans starting as low as 4.47%, supporting members with education around fraud protection, or providing financial literacy workshops at WSU, the University of Idaho and local care facilities, their focus is always on supporting the community first.

P1FCU’s impact goes beyond banking. Under Russell’s leadership, P1FCU has supported the Pullman Youth Baseball Association, local auctions and even helped provide holiday meals for eight families in Pullman this past winter.

Their commitment to the community is something that has made a lasting impression on our Executive Director Pete Chittenden, who has been a P1FCU member for over a decade.

“P1FCU is all about the people of our community,” shared Chittenden. “Customer service is alive and thriving here — they don’t just make you feel welcome, they treat you like family,” he added.

We’re back with our first Member Spotlight of May! This month, the Pullman Chamber is proud to highlight Spokane Falls Community College - Pullman (SFCC) — an accessible and flexible higher education institution making a lasting impact right here on the Palouse. The Chamber recently connected with the SFCC Pullman team to learn more about their background, programs and how they serve their students.

Operating in Pullman for 25 years, SFCC moved to its current location on the WSU campus in the spring of 2017, transitioning from its previous location inside the former Gladish Community & Cultural Center. SFCC Pullman is part of Spokane Colleges, which includes both Spokane Falls Community College and Spokane Community College. Together, Spokane Colleges provide prospective students with a wide array of educational offerings, ranging from GED preparation and High School + completion programs to ESL and liberal arts courses, technical training and more. The range of different options allows the institution to meet students wherever they are in their educational journey and help them move forward.

Flexibility is a key component of the SFCC experience. Students can attend classes online or in person, and small class sizes — often capped around 25 students — allow for personalized support and deeper classroom engagement. As one student shared, “As a nontraditional student with three kids finishing an AA, I appreciated that it's open — you have the ability to choose online or in person.” Programs like Running Start provide high school students and homeschoolers with the opportunity to earn college credit early. Full-time Running Start students can graduate with an associate degree alongside their high school diploma.

Affordability is another clear advantage to studying at SFCC Pullman. At approximately $4,300, an associate degree at SFCC costs only about one-third of attendance at a four-year university. Combined with free applications and financial aid opportunities, SFCC provides a strategic way to enter higher education at a lower price point. Unique to SFCC’s Pullman Center, students at the institution also benefit from being located on the WSU campus, where they are granted access to amenities like the WSU Rec Center (except high school students), recreational clubs and the WSU food pantry. Many SFCC faculty members also teach at WSU, facilitating academic connections and potential pathways for transfer.

Whether you’re starting higher education or making a career switch, SFCC Pullman is the perfect place to help you succeed in your educational journey and identify the quickest way to achieve your next educational or professional step.
