Today’s education moment: House numbers.

When you call 911, whether it be needing police, EMS, or fire to respond, sometimes time is critical. If we can’t locate your residence due to lack of adequate signs and mailbox numbers, it can take responders much longer than it should to locate your residence. You can help reduce this confusion by making sure your residence is well numbered. Make sure the numbers on your mailbox are large enough to be easily seen and are placed on both sides of the mailbox. Also, if you know your house is difficult to locate, you can inform 911 dispatch of this and give them information to help responders locate the residence.

Another option is by purchasing the Locator 911 light bulb. This is a porch light bulb that you can connect to WiFi or even hardwire it in and it changes from a normal light bulb color to Blue when 911 has been called so it can help responders locate your residence. You can learn more about this and purchase some by going to the website at the bottom of this post.

Help us be able to help you in times of need by making it easier to locate your residence.

Emergency Services were dispatched to a reported MVC w/out entrapment. Arriving units find a large truck in its side. One transported out of caution, unknown extent of injury at this time.

If you will be traveling on Pigeon Roost in the area of Maxwell Hill Rd., please find an alternate route as clean up is expected to take a while.

Be safe!

GCFR is on scene at this time of a two vehicle MVC that had reports of entrapment on Hwy 31A in the area of Sumac. Giles County Sheriffs Department arrived on scene first and found there was no entrapment.
There are no injuries reported and no one was transported by Giles County EMS.

There is still road blockage at the bridge under construction and is currently impassable.
If you are traveling 31A this morning, please find an alternate route.

Thank you!

Today we had several of our Medical Death Investigators and our Medical Director attend a class in Nashville to help us perform better in our Medical Death Investigations. We use this information and training to ensure that when your loved ones pass away, we are able determine if there is a further need for an autopsy or if the passing was natural.

The class took place at the Tennessee State Library and Archives.

As we begin to reach more people through our page, one of the things we would like to do is help educate the public on various pieces of equipment that we use and that you might see as we provide patient care to the public.

Today, we will be discussing the cardiac monitor. We currently use the Zoll series X monitor, as shown in the picture. This one piece of equipment gives our providers multiple pieces of information to help us treat our patient. It can tell us what the blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen level is at that moment. Using the four standard stickers (leads/electrodes) we can see what the patient’s heart rhythm is, and by adding 6 more leads, we can get a big picture of the heart. This can tell us if our patient’s heart rate is too fast, too slow, irregular, or if they’re having a STEMI which is an active heart attack that we can see on the monitor. We can also send a picture of the patient’s EKG to the receiving hospital, which can help improve times to get the patient into the cath lab where the blocked arteries are opened back up via a stent. This information helps providers make treatment and destination decisions based on what’s best for our patient.

Also, if someone is in cardiac arrest, the crew will place defibrillator pads, similar to pictured below, on the patient and can see what the heart is doing. If the patient is in the appropriate rhythm, they can administer appropriate electricity through the pads to attempt to shock the heart back into a normal rhythm and help the heart begin to beat normally again.

There are a few more things that can be done with these cardiac monitors, but this is a brief overview of some of the main ways our crews use these on a daily basis. This important piece of equipment helps our crews bring the ER to our patients in the community.

Responded to a structure fire with Pulaski Tennessee Fire Department.

It’s important for EMS to standby at structure fires due to the inherent risk that is associated with fighting fires.

Firefighters are susceptible to burns, smoke inhalation and crush injuries from collapsing structures. They can also suffer from heat exhaustion. Due to the high stress from fighting fires, they are also more susceptible to cardiac diseases.

We are there not only for the potential victims, but also our fellow emergency responders.
