Special thanks to the Aberdeen Neighborhood Assn for the invitation to share my talk 'Transforming the places we live to places we love' last evening. This was the first community based talk using the 10 principles of Re-Urbanism from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The talk focused on Pueblo's rich historical, cultural and artistic assets and how they play a critical role in building the future of the past. The new PO Box ART project at the Historic Federal Building was used as an example of how we thoughtfully use existing resources to build place and engagement. The Whole Works is dedicated to reinvigorating American clothing manufacturing, while creating sustainable, dignified jobs. Our clients are designers looking for a new kind of manufacturing partner, one who can deliver smaller minimums and quicker turn around times, as well as a deep respect for the many people who have a hand in creating every garment. We are a for-profit public benefit corporation in Rifle, Colorado.

What’s in our name? Our name stems from our experience and belief that when a business seeks to maintain the whole connection between all the stakeholders — public and private, design and manufacturing, work and family, community and business, industry and the environment, social enterprise and profits — things work well.

HISTORIC PRESERVATION AND REURBANISM ARE CORE PRINCIPLES AT KONVERGE • CENTER FOR CREATIVITY

Concerned local citizens formed the nonprofit organization, Roundhouse Preservation, Inc., to develop and implement a preservation plan for the Hugo Roundhouse. The Roundhouse was constructed in 1909 and remains one of the few surviving railroad roundhouses in America. CPI listed the resource as endangered in 2002 as a result of its condition. Since listing, Roundhouse Preservation, Inc. has produced a great deal of progress and success in recent years. Even after strong winds toppled nearly the entire north wall, insurance funds were fortunately available to complete a high quality masonry reconstruction. Due to an ongoing cooperation between Roundhouse Preservation, Inc. and the Colorado Department of Transportation, the Roundhouse was recently selected to receive $555,000 in federal stimulus funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 for the rehabilitation of the entire roof structure. The next phase of work will include restoration of the windows and doors towards the eventual reuse of the Roundhouse as a museum and community meeting space.
