Friends of Chief Plenty Coups State Park

Friends of Chief Plenty Coups State Park Chief Plenty Coups State Park is a day use park located within the Crow Indian Reservation in south-central Montana, 40 minutes south of Billings.

Chief Plenty Coups State Park is a cultural and historical state park located in Pryor, MT within the Crow Indian Reservation, just 35 miles south of Billings. Chief Plenty Coups (Aleek-chea-ahoosh, meaning "many achievements") was the last traditional chief of the Crow Tribe and his home is now a National Historic Landmark. Upon Chief Plenty Coups’ death in 1932, 190 acres of his land was turned

into a public park. This decision was made by Chief Plenty Coups and his wife, Strikes the Iron. The park is a day use park where people can see and walk around his log home, sacred spring, and homestead. There is also a visitor center with exhibits about Chief Plenty Coups and the history of the Crow People as well as a gift shop. There is a 3/4 mile trail around the park along beautiful Pryor Creek. The tranquil, shaded picnic area is a beautiful spot to enjoy lunch and absorb the serenity of this special place.

All the way from Sweden! A bit of history about Pryor.

Hello!
My name is Ingegerd K-Larsson, I live in Sweden.
When my working days was over, I become interested in my relative's story's back in time. I was told there was a family who had a document file (paper) from my grandfather's sister Hanna Maria Wiggman. This i know have in my possession.
Hanna was born in Sweden in the year 1891, in a small village, by a poor country- farmer. She was the youngest child of five. Her mother died when she was seven years old.
As an age of 24 she emigrated alone to (Amerika) In Chicago she entered the Babtist Training school, an become a missionary.
In November 1924 she arrived at Edgar station, from Arizona. She lived in Pryor in
an apartment in the mission house, along with preacher John Frost and his family.
(Hanna called the preachers wife " Lizzy")
There was also a woman, whose story is thin. Among other people there are mentioned and small stories about is/ Chief Plenty Coups, Lucy Turns Back, Mr. Peltzer (Baptist chief ) Mr doc. Holgate, Charley C and his son Stanly (interpreters)
Mr. Wilson (chauffeur) Jack? Miss Ruby Norton and a little boy called Bobby Jones. And she also had a dog. Hanna drove a T- ford she called " Betsy"
Hanna was a warm - hearted person, i think.
Her intensions were always " for a good sake" Honesty in every engagement where- ever she lived. She was placed in many places by the Babtist Church, which she was faithful to, in her whole life. Hanna stayed five years nearby the Crow tribe- reservation. The people there become to trust her, that much, that they gave her a dress (Crow-style) and named her as
Be- re-ha " ke-ke- hoosh.
(A fantastic gift from your people!)
It brings me happiness to believe that my relative Hanna, maybe had the opportunity to drink the water from the spring from Chief P.C; s land? And maybe also had a taste of an apple from the trees who's still there hundred years later. (I saw this on YouTube) It's produces that you are taking such a good care of the apple-trees, rare in your state, I think?
In my " biggest dreams" I overcome some seeds from an apple from Chief P C, s garden of apples. This to be replanted at the garden at the place where Hanna was born, in springtime.
Hanna lived her last years in Alambra, California. She died 1978, and was buried in USA, soil. (she became an American citizen 1929)
I have recently finishing reading the book by Frank B Linderberg, where Chief P.C; s tells stories about his life.
You Native Americans has been treated badly in so many ways, it's a wonder that your people in Crow- tribe has been able to stand up proudly for your cause in old times, as well as in present time. Treasured items (museum) traditions and land to generations to come.
I myself had become a big fan of the state of Montana, and the beautiful nature there are!
WISH YOU ALL THE BEST FOR THE NEW YEAR 2026!
