Spadefoot toads (Scaphiopus holbrookii) breed explosively on warm, rainy nights in spring and summer. They live throughout the national seashore, but they especially like the Province Lands. There, untold numbers of toads cross roads on wet evenings to mate in shallow, temporary dune ponds. They are rarely seen or heard other than on rainy nights in spring and summer. Spadefoots are listed as threatened in Massachusetts. Given their rarity elsewhere in the state, Cape Cod National Seashore is one of this animal’s most important sites.

⚠️Vehicle mortality causes many spadefoot toad deaths each spring and summer.
⚠️Give ‘em a brake! Slow down on rainy spring and summer nights to allow them to cross roads to breed.
⚠️On rainy nights, travel before dusk, if possible, especially on Province Lands and Race Point roads.
