Last summer and throughout the fall, the Town's housing office was fortunate to host Brown University senior Kylee Hong as an intern and research fellow. Kylee dove right into the community and the work, and recently published her senior thesis, "Sea-change(s): Municipal Housing Policy and Local Political Economy in Provincetown, MA."

Drawing from archival research, interviews, and firsthand municipal planning experience, the thesis examines how Provincetownโ€™s political, cultural, and economic forces have shaped local housing policy over the past five decades, offering insight into the challenges of housing affordability in seasonal and tourism-driven communities. Given the importance of housing and the severity of the crisis, this thesis stems from a one central question: what can local governments do about housing?

This past weekend while at my 15-year college reunion at Brown, I had the opportunity to see Kylee graduate at the Urban Studies Department Ceremony, the same department in which I also concentrated while a student.

For those interested, you can find her thesis here: https://www.provincetown-ma.gov/DocumentCenter/View/20714/Sea-Changes--Kylee-Hong?bidId=

The Town of Provincetown is conducting a community survey to better understand resident experiences, priorities, and satisfaction with Town services.

Your feedback will help inform Town planning, budgeting, and policy decisions.

We hope to repeat this survey every few years to be able to compare resident satisfaction and priorities over time.

The survey should take you about 10-15 minutes to complete, and is completely anonymous as we aren't asking for your name, address, email, or any other personally identifiable information.

Learn more and complete the survey online at https://buff.ly/7GSXIVB

Paper copies are also available at Town Hall, the Library, and Council on Aging.

Yesterday marked my 5-year anniversary as your Town Manager. Iโ€™m full of gratitude to the people of Provincetown for welcoming me here back in 2021. I have been so fortunate to work alongside the Select Board to help advance their vision and goals, work with so many talented and committed colleagues on Town staff, and to live in a community where the people are as special as its landscape and history.

Over the last 5 years, we have accomplished great things together. To tackle our housing crisis, weโ€™ve built dozens of new affordable housing units, launched Lease to Locals, converted idle Town properties into seasonal worker housing, and land banked properties for future housing development. Weโ€™ve also enacted regulations on short-term rentals and formally dedicated rooms-tax receipts into a new Housing Fund.

We built a long-needed Police Station and ushered in new leadership in the department that has strengthened our commitment to community policing.

For the first time in history, our Fire Department has firefighters, paramedics and EMTs on shift 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, transitioning from an all-volunteer department to a full-time combination Fire Department to enhance public safety for us all.

Weโ€™ve advanced critical open space projects โ€“ not only securing more land for conservation and passive recreation but also building new shared spaces โ€“ like Cannery Wharf Park and the reimagined and soon-to-be completed Motta Field (not to mention helping solve the pickle that is pickleball).

In infrastructure, we advanced a plan to modernize and expand our sewer system to connect the entire town by 2030 and will soon break ground on the Shank Painter Road redesign project to provide enhanced pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure on this key gateway to our town. And we are also in the midst of assessing our future water needs and planning for the future.

We completed a Coastal Resiliency Plan to help guide our work by ensuring we make the necessary investments to protect our town from the threat of climate change, rising sea levels and coastal storms.

We also continue to advance a governance philosophy that values transparency, communication, and community engagement. Weโ€™ve balanced our budgets, strengthened internal financial practices, and transitioned both the MacMillan Pier and our Airport into Enterprise funds.

None of this progress would be possible without the partnership of Town staff or the support of the residents of Provincetown. There is a lot more work to do, and I look forward to continuing our work together to ensure Provincetown remains the special place we know it to be. Itโ€™s an honor to be in community with all of you.

The Town is excited to announce that applications are now open for new year-round affordable rental housing at Province Post! Apply online at www.provincepost.com

When complete, Province Post will include 65 new rental apartments, including 61 affordable units and 4 market-rate units, representing one of the most significant additions of year-round affordable housing in the community in decades. The development will feature a mix of studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments designed to serve individuals and families and support Provincetownโ€™s year-round workforce. The community is expected to house more than 100 year-round residents once fully occupied.

The application deadline is Monday May 11, 2026. Affordable units at Province Post will be filled through a housing lottery process, ensuring a fair and transparent method for selecting residents. Local preference applies for qualifying applicants. The lottery drawing will be held virtually and recorded on May 18, 2026 at 11:00 AM, with a public viewing available at Provincetown Town Hall.

If you need help with your application contact Provincetown Housing Director, Mackenzie Perry at [email protected]

We are deeply saddened by the tragic capsizing of a fishing vessel off Race Point earlier today. Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those on board, as well as with the Coast Guard, Environmental Police, State Police, and Provincetown first responders who responded so quickly in the search and rescue efforts.

Provincetown has a long and proud maritime history, and fishing has always been a central part of our communityโ€™s identity. The fishing community is a close-knit one, where the dangers of the sea are well understood and deeply respected. We know the loss of these fellow fishermen will no doubt be deeply felt by many here who share that bond.

On behalf of the Town of Provincetown, we extend our deepest condolences to the families of those lost, to the New Bedford fishing community, and to the broader fishing community in Provincetown and beyond during this incredibly difficult time.
