Like many local officials, Town of Lincoln, RI Administrator Philip Gould frequently hears from concerned residents about the deteriorating sidewalks in their community, including along Route 123 – a state highway.

Strained municipal budgets mean that cities and towns like Lincoln do not have the resources to maintain sidewalks along state-owned highways, creating unsafe conditions for pedestrians.

We continue to urge the General Assembly to pass legislation to return the maintenance responsibility for sidewalks along state roads to the state.

Tight municipal budgets can often make critical road repairs a financial challenge for local communities. Thanks to Governor Dan McKee's Rhode Restore program, state investment has helped repair more than 800 miles of roadways across the state, making local streets safer and easier to navigate for Rhode Islanders.

“Adding local road improvement to our already tight municipal budget is a real challenge. And the reality is, often times, needed work on local roads would just get deferred because they didn’t have the money. But thanks to Rhode Restore, nearly $140 million had been invested in local roads. It’s a long, overdue shot in the arm to make roads smother and safer,” Rhode Island Department of Transportation acting Director Robert Rocchio said.

"I am a firm believer that educating our students will bear fruit for the future."

Woonsocket Mayor Chris Beauchamp testified before Senate Finance to voice his strong support for H. 8351, which, based on the work of the Rhode Island Foundation's Blue Ribbon Commission, will ensure that Rhode Island's school funding formula is fair, accountable and sustainable for every community.

School budgets have a large impact communities of all sizes, all across the state. H. 8351, proposed legislation based on the findings of the Rhode Island Foundation's Blue Ribbon Commission, will reimagine Rhode Island's education funding formula to reflect the true cost of education, support students’ needs and deliver accountability

In his testimony before the House Finance Committee, Mayor Brett Smiley shared that "the predictability and stability [offered by H. 8351] is crucial for us."

The League looks forward to working together with the General Assembly on passing this important legislation.
