Last Thursday, on the first anniversary of Governor McKee signing the Rhode Island Cannabis Act into law, the Rhode Island Cannabis Justice Coalition gathered at the statehouse to remind government officials that economic justice and equity must remain priorities in cannabis policy through the process of appointing Commissioners, establishing rules and regulations, and distributing licenses.
We restated the values of the coalition: social and racial equity, labor solidarity, cooperative ownership, minority ownership, and centering directly-impacted communities.
The RICJC calls on state legislators to ask Commission and Advisory Board nominees how they intend to prioritize these values, and to demand that the implementation of the law delivers on the original promises of inclusion and equity for those communities who have been harmed by cannabis prohibition.
In the meantime, the Coalition continues to develop policy demands, incubate worker-owned cooperatives, and build grassroots community support for a truly just cannabis economy here in Rhode Island.
Interested in getting involved in the cannabis justice movement? Join us as part of the coalition! Stay tuned for our next outreach meeting happening on July 11th.
