Congratulations to all our award recipients from the Rhode Island Clean Water Association’s (RICWA) annual banquet earlier this month. 🏆🎉

NBC’s Chairman Vincent Mesolella received the RICWA Clean Water Advocate Award. This award honors an individual whose sustained leadership, mentorship, and advocacy have advanced education, workforce development, and industry standards to strengthen the clean water profession and protect public health and the environment. Chairman Mesolella is the inaugural recipient of this prestigious award, which is only fitting considering the decades he has devoted to clean water.

Principal Environmental Engineer CJ Spellman received the Young Professional Award, which recognizes an emerging clean water professional with fewer than eight years of experience who demonstrates strong commitment, leadership, and engagement in advancing the wastewater industry, fostering professional growth, and supporting the mission of the RI Clean Water Association.

NBC’s Bucklin Point facility received the Joseph Mattera Safety Award for the facility’s commitment to excellence in safety and the Field’s Point facility received the Silver Award which recognizes a treatment facility with only one violation during the calendar year.

Congratulations again to all our award recipients whose dedication, professionalism, and commitment help protect RI’s water quality every day! 👏

We celebrated another incredible year of the Watershed Explorers Program yesterday!

The NBC’s Watershed Explorers program hosted its 23rd end-of-year celebration at Governor Notte Park in North Providence recognizing the students and educators who made this year such a success. The program encourages students and teachers to become stewards of the environment, focusing on their local watershed and other surrounding water bodies. Students participate in in-class lessons, field trips and exploring and completing experiments in their watershed in the hopes that they grow to understand how vital watersheds are and work to protect them for future generations.

The day consisted of student presentations and fun educational activities put on by NBC staff, , , , , , , , and .

Thank you to everyone who participated in the process of planning this event, the outside vendors who attended to help educate, our staff, and a special thanks to NBC’s amazing Environmental Education Coordinator Cynthia Morissette for all her hardwork and dedication to this amazing program!

Today the Narragansett Bay Commission proudly hosted its 31st annual Environmental Merit Awards Breakfast, recognizing 23 companies for achieving perfect compliance. Each year NBC recognizes companies among its 1500 permitted users who have achieved perfect regulatory compliance, an outstanding commitment to protecting our environment and local waterways.

We were honored to welcome as our guest speaker, who expressed the importance of environmental stewardship and strong community partnerships in preserving RI’s precious Narragansett Bay for future generations.

Congratulations to all of this year’s honorees for setting the standard in environmental responsibility and helping us protect Narragansett Bay.

Today is a very special day: it's the 125th birthday of the Field's Point Wastewater Treatment Facility!

Field’s Point has been the heart of clean water in Providence since 1901, working everyday day, 24 hours a day to keep our rivers and Narragansett Bay clean for our local communities.

This week we unearthed a time capsule we buried at Field’s Point for its 100th birthday. Although a lot of what was inside was damaged by ground water that made its way into the capsule, it was exciting to see all the old photos and memories.

Cheers to 125 years of history, resilience, growth, and clean water!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY FIELD’S POINT!

📢PSA: HELP PROTECT OUR PIPES!

Items likes “flushable wipes”, paper towels, feminine hygiene products, grease and cooking oil can cause serious blockages in pipes and sewer systems.

Here are some tips to help keep the flow going smoothly:

▪️Wipes of any kind are not flushable! Baby wipes, disinfecting wipes, and even those wipes labeled “flushable” do not break down like toilet paper does. It’s best to toss those items in the trash.

▪️All feminine hygiene products should be put in the trash, not flushed.

▪️Grease and cooking oil can create some serious clogs once it cools and hardens in your drains and pipes. It’s best to let the grease cool and toss it in the trash.

These small actions can help prevent backups in your home, damage to our sewer system and having to deal with costly repairs.

Please be sure to only flush the 3 P’s 🚽

The Narragansett Bay Commission is proud to sponsor its 33rd annual student poster contest. The theme of this year’s contest is Water’s Journey Through Time.

The NBC would like students to artistically showcase how water has changed or will change over time. We encourage students to use their creativity and come up with their own idea of what the theme means to them.

The theme of the poster contest this year correlates with NBC’s Field’s Point Wastewater Treatment Facility’s 125th birthday! 🎉

NBC is proud to recognize our director of Construction & Engineering, Dave Bowen on two well-deserved, prestigious awards he received last month. Dave received the the E. Sherman Chase award from the New England Water Environment Association (NEWEA) and “Engineer of the Year” award from the Providence Engineering Society (PES).

NEWEA’s E. Sherman Chase award was established in 1960 to recognize members engaged in the operation of municipal and/or industrial wastewater treatment works and demonstrating notable or meritorious accomplishments and achievements in, but not limited to: equipment or process, public relations, management, operation and maintenance, economics, and contributions of information useful to the profession.

The Providence Engineering Society’s “Engineer of the Year” award is presented to a Rhode Island Professional Engineer who the society determines has made notable and lasting impacts on the Rhode Island engineering community.

Dave previously served as the President of PES in the early 2000’s. Dave follows several past NBC Executive Directors who previously received the “Engineer of the Year” award including Ray Marshall (2000) and Paul Pinault (1995).

Congrats to Dave for an award-winning start to 2026 and thank you for your dedication, innovation, and leadership!
