What do you get when you bring together local farmers, dedicated volunteers, and the bounty of our local food system? Fresh, nourishing food for food insecure families across Rhode Island! 🍽️

September is National Hunger Action Month, and to kick things off, we're spotlighting the work of our incredible Hope's Harvest team and volunteers! Week after week, they harvest thousands of pounds of surplus or B-grade local produce that goes straight to hunger relief agencies statewide—not the landfill.

Since 2018, Hope's Harvest has recovered over 1.3 million pounds of produce from going to waste, and counting! Together, we’re fighting hunger one harvest at a time. 🥕

What's better than fresh, local corn on the cob? Grown by Confreda Greenhouses & Farms. Delivered by Market Mobile Farm Fresh Rhode Island. Prepared and served by Better Lives Rhode Island volunteers, including Paul Medici (pictured). And, enjoyed by the guests of the BLRI weekly Community Meal.

🚨 Good food needs you! 🚨

Our gleaning season is in full swing, and we urgently need more volunteers to help us get fresh food out of the fields and onto the tables of Rhode Islanders who need it most.

Gleaning is hands-on, meaningful, and a great way to spend a few hours outside while making a real difference in our local food system. Whether you’re a seasoned gleaner or have never picked a vegetable in your life, there’s a place for you on the farm!

August in Rhode Island means school buses are back on the roads, the ocean is finally warm, and the full bounty of our local farms is ripe for the picking. 🚌

This week, the Food Bank's warehouse welcomed tomatoes gleaned from Farm Fresh Rhode Island's Hope's Harvest program, peppers from Confreda Greenhouses & Farms, and eggplant and yellow & green squash generously donated from The Farmer's Garden in Rehoboth. 🍅🫑🍆

🚚💨 This rainbow of summertime bounty was then loaded onto our trucks bound for our statewide network of 140 member agencies, nourishing our neighbors and making their plates a little brighter.

🌱 A big investment in Rhode Island’s local food system!

We’re excited to share that Farm Fresh RI has received a $700,000 federal earmark secured by Senator Jack Reed to support the growth of small farms, fisheries, and food businesses across Rhode Island.

The investment will help us expand Market Mobile, our online farmers market and food hub connecting more than 100 local farms and food producers with customers across New England—including schools, restaurants, hospitals, hunger relief organizations, and households.

The funding will strengthen the staffing, technology, and distribution infrastructure that makes those connections possible. For local farmers and food producers, that means more opportunities to reach new markets and build reliable customers. For our region, it means continuing to invest in a local food system that supports farmers, feeds our communities, and keeps more food dollars close to home.

We’re deeply grateful to Senator Reed for recognizing the importance of this work and championing this investment in Rhode Island’s farmers and food producers!

We know that one investment can’t solve every challenge facing our local food system—but it gives us important tools and capacity to keep moving forward.
