What started on December 16, 2025, as what appeared to be nothing more than a random pile of metal next door to the fire station quickly became one of the community’s favorite mysteries. Then, on April 2, 2026, construction crews arrived and began work on what many jokingly referred to as a “top secret project” behind the station.

As rumors made their way across social media, the guesses became more creative by the day — everything from an indoor water park, to an ice skating rink, to even a brand-new Chick-fil-A. While we have to admit a built-in chicken sandwich stop would have been a nice addition for the crew, the truth is just as exciting.

We’re proud to share that this is the rebuild of the back half of our fire station, which was heavily impacted by the severe storms on April 2, 2024. After a long two years, seeing this project come to life is a major step forward for our department and our community.

With the expertise of Riedel-Wilks Building Structures Inc., the new addition is being rebuilt stronger, more structurally sound, and updated to better serve our department for years to come.

Most importantly, we want to thank our community for your continued support, patience, and encouragement throughout this process. Your support has meant a great deal to our department as we’ve worked through the challenges of the past two years. We’re excited to see this next chapter take shape — even if it’s not the indoor water park some were hoping for.

Today, on Apraxia Awareness Day, we stand together to raise awareness, show support, and celebrate the incredible strength of those living with apraxia and their families.

Every word spoken, every milestone reached, and every victory—big or small—is a testament to determination, perseverance, and hope. Children and adults with apraxia work tirelessly each day to find their voice, and today we honor their courage and resilience.

Let us continue to spread understanding, encourage inclusion, and support the therapists, educators, families, and advocates who help make communication possible.

A voice may take time to develop, but every voice deserves to be heard. 💙

Immediate Release

At approximately 4:36 a.m., our crews were alerted to a working structure fire in the area of Lawrence Street and Front Street. In accordance with the county’s automatic mutual aid agreement, the Chesapeake Volunteer Fire Department and Rome Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to assist.

Upon arrival, Engine 12-2 encountered heavy fire conditions originating from the second floor of the structure. Due to the intensity of the fire, the Fayette Township Volunteer Fire Department was requested to respond for additional manpower. Crews faced challenges containing the fire due to the residence’s older-style construction.

At approximately 7:30 a.m, the fire was brought under control, and overhaul operations were initiated. We are pleased to report that all occupants were able to safely exit the residence with no reported injuries.

We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the following agencies for their assistance and coordinated response: Chesapeake Volunteer Fire Department, Rome Volunteer Fire Department, Fayette Township Volunteer Fire Department, Lawrence County EMS and Lawrence county 911.

We would also like to thank Proctorville McDonald’s for generously providing food to crews on scene. Their support is greatly appreciated during extended emergency operations.

Today, we reflect on April 2, 2024, when severe storms producing tornadoes moved across our county, leaving a lasting impact on our community. We are incredibly grateful that no injuries were reported and that all of our personnel on duty at the station remained safe.

In the face of adversity, we were reminded of the strength and compassion of those around us. We sincerely thank the members of our community who reached out, checked on us, and offered their support during such a challenging time. Your concern and kindness meant more than words can express.

We also extend our deepest appreciation to our fellow fire departments for their swift assistance and unwavering support. A special thank you goes to the Rome Volunteer Fire Department, Inc., whose members stepped in to check on residents throughout the village while we worked to access and deploy our apparatus. In the days that followed, departments from across the region, along with many dedicated community members, generously gave their time and effort to assist with cleanup and recovery.

Despite the challenges we faced, we remained committed to serving our community without interruption—a testament to the resilience and dedication of everyone involved.

As we continue to move forward, we are encouraged and optimistic to share that the long-awaited rebuilding process will begin very soon. We are proud of how our community came together, and we are truly thankful for the support that made it possible to move ahead stronger than ever.

Due to elevated fire risk conditions in our area today, we strongly urge all residents to refrain from any outdoor burning. Dry conditions, low humidity, and wind can cause fires to spread rapidly and become difficult to control, posing a serious threat to property, wildlife, and public safety.

To help prevent wildfires, please keep the following safety tips in mind:
• Avoid all open burning, including brush, leaves, and trash.
• Properly dispose of cigarettes—never discard them on the ground.
• Do not park vehicles on dry grass, as hot exhaust systems can ignite vegetation.
• Ensure all outdoor equipment is in good working order and not producing sparks.
• Keep a water source or fire extinguisher readily available when working outdoors.

We appreciate your cooperation in helping keep our community safe. If you see smoke or fire, please report it immediately to your local emergency services.

We are pleased to announce that our department has received a new Philips Automated External Defibrillator (AED) through the King’s Daughters AED Donation Program.

Automated External Defibrillators are a critical tool for fire departments and first responders. In the event of sudden cardiac arrest, every second counts. An AED allows trained responders to quickly assess a patient’s heart rhythm and, if necessary, deliver a life-saving shock before advanced medical care arrives. Having this equipment readily available significantly increases the chances of survival and helps us better serve and protect the members of our community during medical emergencies. ❤️🚑🚒

Pictured from left to right are Firefighter George Snyder, King’s Daughters Business Development Manager Jody Archer, and Lieutenant Travis Hoke.

We would like to thank Kings Daughters for this generous donation!

Yesterday, March 15, 2026, members from across Lawrence County gathered at our station to participate in a joint training focused on alternative fuel vehicles. As electric and hybrid vehicles become increasingly common on our roadways, it is critical that emergency responders stay informed on the unique challenges and safety considerations these vehicles present during emergencies.

This training provided firefighters and emergency personnel with valuable knowledge on how to safely and effectively respond to incidents involving electric, hybrid, and other alternative fuel vehicles. From battery hazards to specialized shutdown procedures, understanding these systems is essential to protecting both responders and the public.

We were proud to host this important training, which was attended by members representing more than half of the fire departments in Lawrence County, along with several staff members from Collins Career Center. Opportunities like this allow departments to work together, share knowledge, and strengthen our collective ability to serve our communities safely and effectively. 🚒⚡
