University of Kentucky Research & Education Center Botanical Garden

University of Kentucky Research & Education Center Botanical Garden National Arboretum. Plants of interest are planted on the 1400 acre UK College of Agriculture West Kentucky Substation.

The UKREC Botanical Garden has been moved due to planned construction from 5 acres around the Rottgering-Kuegel Agricultural Research and Extension Building to an area across University Drive. Part of the collection includes daylilies and irises breed by Kentuckians, evaluates plants shared by SERA-27 participants, plants collected from Kentucky native areas and the nursery/landscape industry, and those released by international breeders and the U.S.

As the UKREC Garden is removed to make way for new greenhouses we are so glad the Daylilies many gifts from Mitchell Leichhardt, Casey & Cindy Schott, John Rice, Joe Swanson - Kentucky hybridizers as well as those from Middle Tennessee Daylily Society trials and plant auction and purchased Dr Darrell Apps (past UK Hort Faculty) cultivars have a new home at the wonderful University of The Arboretum, State Botanical Garden of Kentucky

Say hello to our new daylily collection: 120 different cultivars of daylilies, many of them developed right here in Kentucky! Thanks to the dedication of UK Professor Emeritus Winston Dunwell, they encompass decades of collecting, and many of them from the breeders themselves.

After the devastating tornadoes in Princeton, most of the structures at the UK Princeton Research Farm were destroyed. The plants made it through the storm, but the planned new greenhouses took the space where they are planted, so they needed a new home. This Wednesday our Senior Horticulturist worked with Win and Princeton horticulture staff. Together they dug up and labeled 120 different varieties, and then drove them back to Lexington. The daylilies are now safely nestled in their new home in the Perennial Teaching Garden where they will mirror the Iris display that is maintained by the Bluegrass Iris Society. They might not look like much this year, but next year should be amazing!

Many thanks to UKREC, Win Dunwell, Daniel Becker, and his crew for bringing this awesome collection to The Arboretum

The UKREC Botanical Garden was essentially destroyed by the December 10, 2021 tornado, but the Daylilies are still there and have been labeled. Some peonies and other plants including the Saunders Nursery Boxwood Collection. Currently there is no irrigation available and the overwinting house will be replaced with a high tunnel in the orchard. For future posts please follow UKREC Hort Group.
