Last week, the Progress & Poverty Institute’s team traveled to Chicago for one of our most energizing and productive weeks in recent memory: two public events, a lot of behind-the-scenes collaboration, and rare face time for a team spread across the coasts.

What if we stopped taxing buildings and started unlocking the full potential of our cities?

Join us for “Tax & The City: A Big Tent Urbanist Event” in Chicago on April 30 for an evening of conversation, comedy, and community exploring how land value taxation can drive equitable development, reduce speculation, and strengthen city finances.

This event brings together leaders across policy, economics, and urbanism, including:
• John Norquist (former Mayor of Milwaukee)
• Daryl Fairweather (Chief Economist, Redfin)
• Dr. Josie Faass (Executive Director, PPI)
• Greg Miller (Center for Land Economics)

Expect a dynamic mix of ideas, panel discussion, and networking with advocates shaping the future of cities.

This past weekend, we proudly celebrated 101 years of the Progress and Poverty Institute.

Founded in 1925 as the Robert Schalkenbach Foundation, our mission has remained rooted in sharing the ideas of Henry George and advancing the belief that economic progress should benefit everyone.

For a century, we have worked to inspire dialogue, challenge assumptions, and promote solutions for a more just future.

Here’s to 101 years of ideas, impact, progress, and to the work ahead.

This Earth Day, we’re reminded of a simple truth: the planet provides enough for everyone to thrive.

Real progress means making sure that what our world offers benefits all of us.

Let’s care for what sustains us and build a future where opportunity is shared.

Property taxes are often blamed for the housing crisis, but that framing misses a critical point: what we tax matters.

In this new piece for Shelterforce, our Executive Director, Dr. Josie Faass, makes the case that when we shift toward taxing land value and capturing the community-created value of land. We can reduce speculation, encourage productive use, and support more equitable housing outcomes.

This is the kind of policy shift needed to move from scarcity to stability.

Taxing land and buildings at different rates can discourage land speculation and encourage housing development.
