Today I experienced the beautiful Wyman garden- an amazing listening spot for the carillon .

Learn more about this special space:

• Tucked beside Procter Hall at the Graduate College is Wyman Garden, which was designed in the early 1900s by Beatrix Jones Farrand, the University’s first consulting landscape architect and a powerful force in shaping the look of the campus. The garden, which covers about one-third of an acre, bursts with wild geranium, ageratum, Japanese spirea, lamb’s ear and oakleaf hydrangea. There are old stone fountains — one with a lion’s head — and a sundial that was donated in 1918 by the Princeton chapter of the Garden Club of America. An arbor along one side of the garden is covered by European hornbeam.

American Hymn Society Conference Opens with Carillon Concert at Princeton University Graduate School - July 19, 2026, 1:00pm, Graduate College, Free parking Lot 19, Springdale Rd.

The American Hymn Society Conference will open with a special concert as part of Princeton University's Summer Carillon Concert Series, featuring acclaimed carillonneur Michelle Lam. The performance will take place on Princeton University's renowned 67-bell manual carillon and will showcase a diverse program that bridges centuries of musical tradition.

Lam's program will include contemporary settings of familiar hymns, original compositions for carillon inspired by sixteenth-century automatic carillon melodies, works commemorating America's 250th anniversary, and a selection of popular favorites. The concert reflects both the rich heritage and evolving artistry of the carillon tradition.

Michelle Lam serves as Associate Carillonneur at both the Netherlands Carillon in Arlington, Virginia, and the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. An active recitalist who performs throughout North America, she also holds leadership positions within the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America.

In addition to her musical accomplishments, Lam earned a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Michigan and works as an antitrust economist in the Washington, D.C., area.

The concert offers conference attendees and the broader community an opportunity to experience the unique voice of the carillon through a program that celebrates faith, history, and American musical traditions.
