Following the construction of the Lodge, Newell Avery Eddy Jr. embarked on a quest to procure suitable furniture. Unable to find pieces that met his standards, he established a workshop behind the Lodge and crafted the furniture with the same builders that built the Lodge. Today, these exceptional pieces are over 100 years old and are no longer in production. Unfortunately, one of the chairs suffered damage during this year's Pancake Breakfast, but fortunately, our neighbor and friend, Don Bourdeau, skillfully restored it to its former glory. We extend our sincerest gratitude to him for his efforts. His documented steps:

"I drilled a 5/8th inch hole in both sections of the broken leg then inserted a 5/8 inch oak dowel in the hole along with Titebond glue. I used a ratchet strap to hold it in place while the glue cured overnight. Three headless 2-1/2 inch screws were drilled diagonally between the two leg sections for extra stability. Itโ€™s not perfect but the leg should now hold up for another 100 years".

MLive's second most prominent native from every Michigan County. For Presque Isle County, they highlighted Marjorie Swank Matthews. A distinguished inductee of the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame, Marjorie Matthews was born on July 11, 1916, in Onaway, Michigan. Notably, in 1980, Matthews made history as the first woman elected bishop within the Methodist Church, a milestone achieved in over 200 years. She served as bishop in Wisconsin until her retirement in 1984. Matthews passed away in 1986 at the age of 69.

Newell Avery Eddy Sr. (1856-1917), a distinguished figure in Bay City, was a multifaceted entrepreneur who owned a boat, a lumber business, and a bank. He resided at 615 N. Grant Street and was the owner of the esteemed Grand Lake Hunting and Fishing Club. His son went on to build the Lodge. Notably, Eddy was an avid ornithologist, boasting an extensive collection of birds, meticulously mounted and displayed in a dedicated room. His collection was the largest in the state. Following his passing, his wife commissioned a beautiful fountain in Elm Lawn Cemetery in his honor. The fountain, crafted from Vermont granite, stands three and a half feet high and three feet across, featuring intricate bas-relief carvings of a heron, wild ducks, and a dragonfly. Two robins, carved to resemble birds quenching their thirst, adorn the edge of the bath. The fountain's centerpiece is a constantly flowing spring, providing fresh water. Due to wartime restrictions, the installation of this remarkable monument took some time to complete.

This postcard, dated August 19, 1908, features the iconic Thunder Bay Island Lighthouse, situated on a 215-acre island. Established in 1857, the lighthouse serves as a beacon, marking the entrance to Thunder Bay, the harbor of Alpena, and the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Thunder Bay Island is a protected nature preserve, but the Alpena Shipwreck Tours offers a sightseeing trip called the Thunder Bay Island Lighthouse Cruise aboard the Lady Michigan to view and experience the historic Thunder Bay Island Lighthouse from the water.

The Alpena Mural Trail features exceptional artwork, including a stunning piece by David Swartz that commemorates the 19-year legacy of Muddy Paws at that location. Completed in July 2026, it was the inaugural installation of the Fresh Waves public art project for that year. Truly remarkable!
