In Memory of Ralph “Butch” Schaffer

The Prescott Fire Department mourns the passing of retired firefighter Ralph “Butch” Schaffer, who passed away July 31 at the age of 85.

Butch proudly served the Prescott Fire Department for 28 years. He was a hardworking and dedicated member of PFD, and his connection to the department continued long after his retirement. When his health allowed, Butch was a familiar face at department gatherings with our retired members — a reminder that membership in the fire service doesn’t simply end when the gear is hung up.

Butch’s ties to PFD also run through his family. His stepsons, Mark and Mike Hudak, are retired PFD members, and his nephew, Mike Sterud, is also part of the PFD family.

Today, as family and friends gather to celebrate Butch’s life, Engine 1 and our 1937 fire truck will be on display at Old Ptacek’s Event Center in recognition of his many years of service to our department and community.

We extend our deepest sympathies to Butch’s family, friends, fellow firefighters, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Rest easy, Butch. Thank you for your 28 years of service to Prescott. We’ll take it from here.

❤️🚒 Fire Prevention Starts Early! 🚒❤️

Today, the Prescott Fire Department visited New Adventures to teach our youngest community members about staying safe in an emergency.

The children learned about:
🔥 Creating a home fire escape plan
🚗 Proper booster seat and seat belt use
📞 When and how to call 911

Tonight’s homework is to practice fire safety at home with their families:
🏠 Listen for your home’s smoke alarm.
🚪 Practice crawling low under “smoke.”
✋ Feel a door with the back of your hand before opening it.
🪟 Talk about what to do if a door isn’t safe to use.
📍 Choose a family meeting place outside.
❌ And remember: Once you’re out, stay out! Never go back inside a burning building.

A big thank you to PFD’s Natalie for hosting the training and the staff at New Adventures for welcoming us and helping us share these life-saving lessons. We love partnering with our community to help keep Prescott families safe! ❤️👨‍🚒👩‍🚒

National Police Week is a time to recognize and thank the men and women who serve and protect our communities each and every day.

The Prescott Fire Department is proud to work alongside our law enforcement partners through long days, difficult calls, emergencies, and community events alike. Their commitment, professionalism, and willingness to serve do not go unnoticed.

This week, we especially remember the officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty and honor all those who continue to wear the badge today.

Thank you to the members of the Prescott Wisconsin Police Department and Pierce County, WI Sheriff's Office for your service, sacrifice, and dedication to the communities you protect.

Dry spring conditions continue to create an elevated risk for grass fires across western Wisconsin. While conditions are expected to improve some over the weekend with higher humidity, lighter winds, and chances for scattered rain, dry grasses can still ignite and spread quickly — even from small controlled burns.

Before burning:
• Check current burn conditions and local restrictions
• Avoid burning on windy days
• Keep water or a hose nearby
• Never leave a fire unattended
• When in doubt, wait for safer conditions

Many grass fires start from burns that were intended to stay controlled. A little extra caution can go a long way in protecting homes, property, fields, and neighboring communities.

Check Wisconsin burn conditions anytime using:
• Wisconsin DNR WisBurn Map/App
• Burn Hotline: 1-888-WIS-BURN (947-2876)
