𝐒𝐄𝐃𝐎𝐍𝐀, 𝐀𝐙 - The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office (YCSO) is investigating a tragic fall that occurred this afternoon at Keyhole Cave, located near the Sugarloaf Trailhead in Sedona, which resulted in the death of a climber.

At approximately 1:30 p.m. this afternoon, YCSO deputies responded to a report of a climber who had fallen inside Keyhole Cave. When deputies arrived, they found a male climber who had fallen while reportedly rappelling to the cave floor. Another climber present at the scene immediately attempted life-saving measures. Tragically, the man succumbed to his injuries.

At this time, foul play is not suspected. However, the exact circumstances surrounding the fall remain under active investigation. Community members and visitors are requested to avoid the Keyhole Cave at this time to allow emergency personnel to complete their operations.

The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office extends our deepest condolences to the climber's family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.

𝐂𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐰𝐨𝐨𝐝, 𝐀𝐙 - On June 11th, The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office arrested Chester Cox of Cottonwood following an investigation into allegations of child molestation that were reported years after the incidents occurred.

The investigation began when the mother of an 18-year-old male disclosed to a deputy at her church that her son had been molested by an adult male when he was approximately 11 to 12 years old.

Over the course of several days, detectives conducted an extensive investigation and determined that the suspect was a Teacher at Dr. Daniel Bright Elementary School. It was found that the abuse did not occur on school grounds, that the incidents took place at a private residence, and that the victim was not enrolled in the suspect’s school. It was also determined that the suspect serves as a youth coach in the community and that he did not meet the victim through his employment at the school.

After gathering evidence, detectives established probable cause and identified the suspect as 31-year-old Chester Cox of Cottonwood. Cox was arrested and booked into the Yavapai County Detention Center on three counts of sexual conduct with a minor and two counts of molestation of a child. He is currently being held without bond. The investigation remains active and ongoing.

Investigators determined that Cox has lived in Cottonwood for approximately eight to nine years and has been employed as a teacher at Dr. Daniel Bright Elementary School for approximately seven years. Prior to relocating to Arizona, he resided in Missouri.

Crimes against children are devastating offenses that can have lasting impacts on survivors and their families. From the moment this report was received, YCSO deputies and detectives acted swiftly to investigate the allegations and secure an arrest. We commend the courage of the survivor and the individual who came forward to report this abuse.

Anyone with additional information related to this case, the suspect, or any other case involving victims of sexual abuse or child molestation crimes is encouraged to contact the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office at 928-771-3260. 𝐂𝐎𝐑𝐍𝐕𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐄, 𝐀𝐙. - In an ironic and highly dangerous turn of events, an impaired driver who left a bar in Cottonwood ended up crashing their truck into cars parked at another bar 7 miles away in Cornville.

On June 7, 2026, at approximately 1:30 a.m., deputies responded to a collision at a bar off Cornville Road. A 26-year-old male driver lost control of a white pickup truck while heading home. The truck veered off the roadway, struck two stone retaining walls, launched over a 12-foot culvert, and rolled multiple times before landing directly on top of at least one unoccupied car. Amazingly, no serious injuries were reported.

During the initial investigation, deputies learned the driver allegedly left a bar in Cottonwood before crashing at the Cornville establishment, which was not reported to be involved in the driver's drinking activities.

The driver showed signs of impairment and registered a staggering .311 on a preliminary breath test. Following medical clearance, the driver was arrested for DUI, Aggravated Assault, Criminal Damage (4 counts), and Endangerment (6 counts).

Regardless of the circumstances that led up to this event, the driver made the conscious and reckless choice to put the community in harm's way by getting behind the wheel while severely impaired. It is, without a doubt, an absolute miracle that no one was seriously injured or killed when the truck rolled through the parking lot and struck other cars.

Make the right decision and do not let a preventable mistake become a permanent tragedy.

𝐒𝐞𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐚, 𝐀𝐫𝐢𝐳. - An Uber driver successfully stopped an elderly woman from falling victim to a fraudulent scam. Last week, a Yavapai County Sheriff's Deputy received a scam report. When the deputy went to investigate, she discovered an unlikely hero who saved the day.

The victim, who is a Village of Oak Creek woman in her 90s, received a phone call from an individual claiming to represent a bank. The incoming call displayed a legitimate-looking phone number. The trickster informed the woman that her debit card and personal information had been hacked, stating they had opened an investigation into the compromised accounts. The scammer instructed the victim to maintain confidentiality regarding the situation and prepare to hand her debit cards over to a courier.

The scam was disrupted when Michael, an Uber driver responding to a ride request for a passenger named "Sam," arrived at the location. Michael observed the elderly woman approaching with a walker, carrying a bag, and holding her phone. When she asked Michael if he was the courier, he identified himself as an Uber driver and immediately recognized the warning signs of a scam in progress. Despite the victim stating she had to follow confidentiality rules, Michael advised her not to proceed with the transaction. Michael then stayed with the victim, drawing on his background as a retired police officer to explain the scam.

The victim expressed deep gratitude for the intervention, stating that he helped prevent her accounts from being completely emptied.

Remember the following tactics used by these criminals:

Scammers may impersonate banking institutions and use spoofed phone numbers that appear legitimate. Often create a false sense of emergency by claiming your personal information or debit card has been hacked or compromised.
Scammers routinely demand confidentiality to isolate victims and prevent them from discussing the situation with others.
Targets may be directed to prepare a bag of items and wait for a "courier" to arrive at their location for pickup.

On May 29th, a YCSO deputy observed a van in Cordes Junction displaying a cancelled license plate. During the stop, it was determined that the plate was a paper copy of the original plate, which had been cancelled. While the initial investigation was being conducted, a male passenger, identified as Mario Paddock (43), ran from deputies but was quickly detained and found to have a felony warrant out of Coconino County.

Deputies then located approximately 2 lbs. of methamphetamine, fentanyl pills, a glass pipe, a scale, and empty bindles along with a firearm. All three occupants, Tamara Yazzie (49), Margaret Nelson (53), and Mario Paddock, were arrested on multiple charges.

Strong teamwork by patrol deputies kept the community safe and removed dangerous drugs from our streets.

𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐭𝐭, 𝐀𝐫𝐢𝐳 - On May 8, 2026, a high-speed evasion ended in a severe, fiery crash on Suncrest Dr. Body-worn camera footage included with this release captures the responding Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office deputy’s courageous and immediate actions, placing personal safety aside to rescue potential occupants from a burning vehicle.

At approximately 11:50 p.m., a YCSO deputy responding to an unrelated call observed a vehicle traveling at triple-digit speeds with no headlights activated. When the deputy attempted a traffic stop, the driver accelerated away, weaving through the area in an effort to evade. The deputy quickly recognized the danger of a high‑speed chase through the business district and chose not to pursue. Despite this, the driver continued to drive at reckless speeds, ultimately losing control after turning north onto Commerce. The vehicle then left the roadway at Suncrest Drive, and went airborne, dropping roughly 100 feet into an embankment before sliding into thick brush. Within moments, the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames.

The driver was able to exit the burning car and was quickly detained. Despite already having the suspect in custody and out of danger, the deputy immediately ran toward the fire, looked into the vehicle and checked the rapidly spreading flames to ensure no additional passengers were trapped inside. His decisive actions demonstrated extraordinary bravery and a steadfast commitment to preserving life.

Fire crews arrived and quickly knocked down the flames. Remarkably, the driver sustained no significant injuries but was transported for precautionary evaluation before being medically cleared. He was arrested for unlawful flight, criminal speed, reckless driving, criminal damage, possession of ma*****na for sale, and endangerment.

This incident highlights an exceptional act by the YCSO deputy to preserve life. Even though the deputy was confident the driver was in custody and safe, he still wanted to ensure there were no other passengers in the vehicle.

𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐭𝐭, 𝐀𝐫𝐢𝐳 - Following an extensive investigation, a suspect has been arrested and charged in connection with a 2025 fatal fentanyl overdose in Prescott.

In March 2025, an adult male fatally overdosed while caring for his two children at a Motel in Prescott. Over the last year, Partners Against Narcotics Trafficking (PANT) Detectives rigorously investigated the case and successfully identified the suspected dealer as 33-year-old Kyle Guanell of Mesa.

On May 21, 2026, PANT arrested Guanell. He is accused of multiple offenses, including manslaughter, the sale of lethal fentanyl, transportation of narcotic drugs, and possession of drug paraphernalia. This operation is a strong collaboration that began with the Prescott Police Department's swift response, and YCSO and PANT Detectives' investigation and follow-through over the past year as well as the Yavapai County Attorney’s Office (YCAO).

"Drug dealers will be held accountable for overdose deaths," said Sheriff Rhodes. "They knowingly sell a deadly drug and should be held responsible. We will tirelessly pursue justice to ensure they face the full weight of the criminal justice system."

The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office has arrested 46-year-old Jason Marchesano on a nationwide warrant for Attempted 2nd‑Degree Homicide, Kidnapping, and Aggravated Assault after a violent attack on his girlfriend in Paulden on October 28, 2025.

Deputies learned Marchesano allegedly strangled and restrained the victim using bedding sheets inside a fifth‑wheel trailer at the property. She escaped and later reported the assault, and deputies documented bruising consistent with her account. The property owners confirmed an argument occurred. Later Detectives obtained a Search Warrant, allowing them to search the scene, where they recovered bedding and the victim’s ID.

Detectives worked multiple leads across Arizona and Nevada before receiving crucial information that Marchesano had traveled to California. Working with the local Law Enforcement, he was located and safely taken into custody at LEGOLAND in California.

This arrest was made possible by strong investigative work, interagency partnership, and a community member who chose to speak up.
