Happy National Doughnut Day! 🍩 Have you ever wondered how this sweet holiday began? It actually has heroic roots!

National Doughnut Day was established in 1938 by The Salvation Army in Chicago to honor the "Doughnut Lassies." During World War I, these brave volunteers traveled to the front lines in France, setting up huts in abandoned buildings near the trenches to serve free doughnuts, coffee, and a listening ear to American soldiers.

Often cooking in oil inside the metal helmets of soldiers, these women brought a much-needed taste of home and comfort to the troops.

So today, as you enjoy your favorite glazed, frosted, or jelly-filled treat, take a moment to remember the incredible women and the sweet history that started it all! ❀️🍩

We at People Who Care AZ would like to thank our volunteers and will have donuts for you at the office!

We will be volunteering at the Lions Pancake Breakfast this Saturday.
