The Jeff Davis SWCD hosted the 1st Annual Pollinator Workshop on Tuesday, August 13 at the Ezra Garner Memorial Building. We would like to thank the Hoxie’s for hosting us at their farm with a tour, everyone who attended for making this a success, Barry Pessoney, USDA/NRCS Wildlife Biologist & Caroline Crawford, Farm Bill Biologist with Quail Forever for being our speakers for the event. We would also like to thank Jeff Davis Farm Bureau, Jeff Davis Farmers Co-op, Jeff Davis County Board of Supervisors and NRCS for helping us sponsor the event.

Jeff Davis SWCD and MSWCC went to Carver Elementary to speak to the Kindergarten, 1st grade and 2nd grade students on Wildlife. Lance Middleton with MSWCC talked with the students and showed them different types of animals from Reptiles, Mammals (Aquatic, Semi Aquatic, Air and Land). The students had lots of questions.. Hope Daley with Jeff Davis SWCD had fun facts with colors and color pages on Bats, Frogs, Owls & Monarch Butterflies.
We really appreciate the invite from Carver Elementary and Mrs. Wilson.

Jeff Davis SWCD hosted its Annual Fall Conservation Field Day at Jeff Davis Lake on Thursday, October 19. Third grade students from Carver and JE Johnson Elementary attended the field day. The students listened to several speakers and learned a great deal about conservation. The speakers that helped to educate the students were from several organization. Lance Middleton from MSWCC, Coen Perrott from MDEQ, Barry Pessoney, Jim Barnes and Tyler McClain from NRCS, Shanell Williamson from SEMRHI, Caroline Crawford from Quail Forever, Suzanne Cook from Marion Cty. SWCD, Deena Hunter from Forrest Cty. SWCD and Smythe Dedeaux from Lawrence Cty. SWCD. Thanks also to Sandra Warren, Jeff Davis SWCD Commissioner for coming to help with the students, Khristjon Walker, NRCS for taking photos and Richard Hathorn for having the lake ready for the students.

"Conservation in the Classroom, Teachers Workshop is being offered for Educators of K - 12th grades. The workshop is scheduled for July 11th - July 14th, 2022. The workshop will be held at The Community Room in Columbia, MS. Participants can earn 3.2 CEU's. There is a refundable $25.00 deposit to reserve your spot for the workshop.

Registration applications need to be completed by May 20, 2022.

The Jefferson Davis County Soil & Water Conservation District, a member of the MS Association of Conservation Districts (MACD) announces an opportunity for scholarships. MACD will be awarding six scholarships, $10,000 each, in January 2023. The scholarship awards are open to any college sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student enrolled in a college/university in Mississippi. Scholarships are open to students pursuing a Natural Resource field of study which includes, but is not limited to: Agricultural, Forestry, Human Sciences, Horticulture, Landscape Architecture. The deadline for submitting an application is October 3, 2022. If you would like to receive an application, stop by the Jeff Davis SWCD office, 714 Columbia Ave., Suite B, Prentiss, Ms 39474 or call 601-792-8601 ext 3 or email [email protected].
