FOOD PANTRY REMINDER
Don't forget that we're collecting peanut butter (16 oz.) for the Preble Community Food Pantry. VVV plans to deliver 50 jars on 2/15 so they can be packed into the donation bags that will be distributed on Thursday, 2/19. Just drop your donation in the bin near Carol Levine's front door (1872 Fulmer Road) or call/text Cathy Merrill (315-729-7020) to make other arrangements.

IN CENTRAL NY, 1 IN 7 RESIDENTS AND 1 IN 5 CHILDREN STRUGGLE WITH FOOD INSECURITY

The Voters for Vision and Values (VVV) are committed to continuing their support of the Preble Community Food Pantry. Going forward, we’ve decided to “adopt” one item, peanut butter (16 oz.), to provide each month for the bags that are distributed. VVV will coordinate your individual donations so that 50 jars are delivered to the pantry each month. You can support this effort by buying an extra jar when you're shopping and dropping it each month at our designated location (any time) or arrange for a pick up. Ordering via amazon and delivering to the drop off site is another option.

If you know of someone who would like to support the pantry but who is not interested in the VVV, they can donate under a separate "Song Lake Community" group. They have also "adopted" an item, spaghetti sauce (24 oz), and offer the same drop off, pick up or Amazon delivery options.

Town of Preble supervisor looks beyond board to name deputy

PREBLE — Town Supervisor Nathan Shirley led the first Preble town board meeting in his term and named a Preble resident as deputy supervisor as opposed to a board member.

Shirley said the position doesn’t have to be a member of the town board, even though that is typical.

Shirley said Michelle Baker agreed to take on the unpaid the position. Baker is a commissioner for the Preble Fire Department and was one of the many short-term rental owners involved with the lawsuit that challenged the town’s ban of short term rentals. The judge sided with the owners.

Shirley said she doesn’t have a vote and cannot make motions, but will run things if he were to be absent. Shirley said Baker wants to help do best by the town.

“She expressed to me that she desires to be an asset to everybody in the town, not just me,” Shirley said. “I think she’ll be a resource for all of us that work for the town and the residents.”

Baker will also have the ability to withdraw money and make purchases for the town if needed.

Shirley said the town’s Code Official and Zoning Officer Rick Fritz put in his resignation. Shirley said he plans on hiring a code enforcement officer from Tully to do additional work in Preble before they can find a replacement.

Shirley said he is not yet ready to hire someone, as he wants to change the position from being an employee to a sub-contractor.

“We’re looking into that,” Shirley said. “I think there’s an opportunity for us to save some money there.”

Preble Highway Supervisor Jeffrey Griswold said the town recently got a grant for new blades that will help scrape ice better in the winter. However they will not get the blades in time for them to be used this winter season.

“We won’t get to use it this year but it’s over $3,000 for those blades,” Griswold said.

The board also extended property tax collection through May 31 of this year. Shirley said this will give residents more time to pay and this defers the money from going to the county for a little bit.

Cortland County Legislative Chair Kevin Fitch said he is looking into staffing and budget efficiencies. Fitch said he plans on bringing County Administrator Michael Ponticello to the February Preble meeting for him to meet and talk about the county more.

The Preble Town Board briefly discussed getting debit or credit cards for online purchases, as opposed to the reimbursements they’ve been doing. The board members said they will talk about it in an executive session and talk more on it in the February meeting.
