"Look around. Think about your experience living in Prairie Village. Swimming at the pool, strolling on our sidewalks. Going to the Jazz Festival, chasing your kids around Franklin Park or running the trails at Meadowbrook. None of that happens by accident, and it’s not guaranteed."

What Janee' Hanzlick County Commission said πŸ‘‡πŸ»πŸ‘‡πŸ»πŸ‘‡πŸ»

Since the late 1980s, residential property taxpayers in Johnson County have had to bear an increasing percentage of the cost of local government. Decisions by the State Legislature have eaten away at funding that was supposed to be shared with counties and cities (like giving personal property tax exemptions to owners of ATVs, golf carts, and business aircraft). The County’s levy could be 2.7 mills lower today if not for the Legislature’s broken promises.
A priority of the Board of County Commissioners is to find ways to reduce the unfair burden on homeowners while continuing to provide quality state-mandated services to a growing and aging population.

Off to a great start!!! Big thanks to our City staff and the members of our Environmental Committee for their work in bringing this pilot program to our community.

But it is a pilot program, so please help us prove this is a worthwhile service that should scale to more parts of the City in the future!

🌎 Sustainability isn't one big thing. It's a million little things. This is one of the small ways we can be more sustainable by diverting waste from landfills AND making a positive contribution to our agricultural/food systems.

Hey, Prairie Village! We appreciate all of the enthusiasm we've seen for our new food composting pilot program. In the first week, we composted more than 500 pounds of food waste!

We've also gone through more composting supplies than KC Can Compost usually uses in a 6-month period. By the time you read this, we may be completely out of countertop bins and buckets (again).

While we wait for more, please keep in mind you do not have to purchase and use the supplies provided by KC Can Compost. While compost must be bagged, you can use any fully compostable liners or even brown paper bags. Five gallon buckets can be purchased at your local hardware store. Countertop bins are also available at a variety of retailors.

Happy composting!

The day after I was elected I got to work on turning existing pledges and promises about decarbonization into plans that can be managed and measured so our community will know how, where, and why we are doing our part to combat the increasingly negative and costly impacts of climate change in and around Prairie Village.

This questionnaire is the next step in this effort to make meaningful progress on sustainability policy in our community. Please take a few minutes to respond and share this with your family, friends, neighbors, and local businesses in PV!

Pull in those bins until next week if you're on the Tuesday or Wednesday waste collection routes. Additional bags/bins will be allowed next week at no additional charge.

Winter weather in the area has impacted Republic Services' ability to collect trash, recycling, and yard waste.

As of February 19, Republic's plan is as follows:

Tuesday, 2/18 - service CANCELED. Twice as much trash and recycling will be collected 2/25

Wednesday 2/19 - service CANCELED. Twice as much trash and recycling will be collected 2/26

Thursday 2/20 - Republic will attempt on-time pickup (subject to change)

Friday 2/21 - Republic will attempt on-time pickup (subject to change)

For those households on this week's canceled routes, Republic Services will collect four extra bags of trash per household next week. Bags should be placed on the ground next to the trash bin. They do not need extra trash stickers as overflow trash normally would. Republic Services does not recommend using a personal trash bin unless it is very sturdy like Republic carts. The best course is to place overage bags on the ground as trucks can squeeze bins very tightly and bend/crack personal containers easily.

For those who have reached out, and those who are unaware, there was an electrical fire in the The Shops of Prairie Village that caused a couple transformers to blow.

See Eric Mikkelson - Prairie Village Mayor post below for more details as he was on the scene as first responders controlled and put out the fire.
