A Friendly Reminder About Yard Signs

With spring upon us, the Village would like to share a friendly reminder about yard signs. We have recently received a number of complaints regarding signs placed throughout the community, so we wanted to take a moment to clarify the rules and the reasons behind them.

Yard signs are not permitted on the public right-of-way. This includes along the shoulder of our roads, on telephone poles, and similar public locations (Village Ordinance, Chapter 24.03 #18).
For signs on residential property, please refer to Chapter 24.05(A)(6). This chapter provides that signs must be set back no less than 20 feet from the property line, the curbline, or the ditchline, whichever is most restrictive, and includes additional rules.

These ordinances exist for a few important reasons:
1. To keep our roadsides clear of clutter and preserve the rural character that makes Prairie Grove special.
2. To comply with Illinois law, which prohibits placing signs and other obstructions in the public right-of-way without permission from the governing highway authority.
3. To ensure our Public Works crews have safe, unobstructed access to the rights-of-way they maintain.

There are practical concerns as well. Signs get blown away in storms and contribute to litter, the metal stands pose a real hazard during Village mowing operations, and our Public Works employees should not have to mow around or remove signs to keep our roadways looking their best.

Illegal signs will be picked up by Public Works. If one of your signs has been removed, you can retrieve it at the Public Works building at the intersection of Gracy and Hwy 31, from 8AM to 3PM Monday-Friday.

We appreciate everyone's cooperation in helping keep Prairie Grove safe, tidy, and beautiful. Thank you for being great neighbors!

Prairie Grove Police Department Announces Additional Enforcement Results

Prairie Grove, IL – The Prairie Grove Police Department today released the results of its enhanced traffic enforcement efforts conducted through the federal fiscal year 2026 Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program. These efforts, carried out between Oct. 1, 2025, and Sept. 30, 2026, were designed to reduce crashes and save lives on Illinois roadways.

During the STEP Enforcement period of October 1, 2025 – October 31, 2025

The breakdown includes:

• 28 speeding citations
• 46 other traffic citations
• 12 uninsured motorists
• 1 traffic arrests

These efforts were part of high-visibility Traffic Safety Campaigns such as “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” “Click It or Ticket” and “Drive High. Get a DUI” the Additional Enforcement focusing on the most dangerous driving behaviors – including impaired driving, speeding, distracted driving and failure to wear seat belts to keep roadways safe and prevent serious crashes.

The goal of this enforcement was to make our roads safer for everyone, by targeting the leading causes of crashes, we aimed to save lives and send a clear message that unsafe driving will not be tolerated.

The STEP Grant was funded with Federal Highway Safety Funds and administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation as part of a statewide effort to improve traffic safety and reduce fatalities.
