City of Prairie City

City of Prairie City Prairie City is a small, but growing community with great opportunities.

Our small, but growing community offers friendly people, vibrant residential neighborhoods, an exceptional school system while striving to provide economic growth through the highest quality of residential, recreational and business development. We are located on Iowa Highway 163 and positioned a few miles from Interstate 80 and just 20 miles from the bustle of larger communities including Newton,

Knoxville, Pella, and Des Moines which offers large city amenities. Surrounded by Iowa’s tallgrass prairie and located near the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge, Prairie City is a peaceful community filled with people who are warm, welcoming, and proud to call this place home.

As part of National Police Week, Chief Gott and Officer Carlson participated in the Jasper County Law Enforcement Memorial ceremony in Newton. Prairie City Officers Donald “Rusty“ Hewitt and Chief Michael German were recognized along with Reserve Captain Howard Holdefer from Jasper County Sheriff’s Department and Officer Daniel McPherren, Officer Bobby Barrickman and Lieutenant Patrick Richardson with the Newton Police Department.

Thank you to all of our police officers for the long hours, difficult decisions, and unwavering commitment to protecting our communities. Your service often comes with personal sacrifice, and we are grateful for all you do — seen and unseen.

This week, we also remember and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Their courage and legacy will never be forgotten.

To all law enforcement officers: thank you for your service, your strength, and your commitment to keeping our communities safe.

𝙎𝙐𝙈𝙈𝙀𝙍 𝙍𝙀𝘾 is fast approaching. For those of you that don't know, this is a great FREE opportunity provided by the City of Prairie City to get your child up and moving in the morning throughout the month of June! We do P.E. style games at the Community Park and/or the rec complex with children currently in kindergarten through 6th grade. In order for children to participate, a parent needs to fill out the registration forms. You can print it here or pick it up at Prairie City City Hall. Forms may be returned to the Prairie City or Monroe Elementary school or Prairie City City Hall. We have also included a tentative schedule (some games may change based on children's interests). Children do not have to participate every day, as we know that summer is a busy time. Please reach out to Jen Kline or Becky Firkins with questions.
