Tom Berry, Past Board of Supervisor, District 2 - Powhatan, VA I recently served on the Powhatan County Board of Supervisors. I appreciate the opportunity I had to serve.

Today is the day to elect our Board of Supervisors as well as our Constitutional Officers for the next four years. Get out and have your voice heard. Vote for who most closely aligns with your beliefs. Remember - you are voting for people to represent you, not a political party. Powhatan is a wonderful county and we all want it to stay that way. The way you vote directly impacts the future of the county in so many ways. Choose the candidate that you believe will do the most good!

Although a past BOS, I am still a firefighter and Fire Prevention Week is a special time of the year for us. Fire Prevention week has been around since 1925 commemorating the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and is geared to preventing fires. Preventing fires is the key. The prevention of fires means there is no loss to our citizen - you.

As we enter the final stretch until the official election day (November 7th) I encourage all citizens to research candidates on (and off) the ballot to find the one that best matches up to your beliefs and values before voting. Just because a party supports one candidate verses another does not necessarily mean they are the best fit/most appropriate.

Fire officials are reminding residents to change the batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors as well. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the risk of dying in a home fire is cut in half in homes with working smoke alarms. “Change your clock, change your battery” is a simple phrase that reminds us to always make sure we have working smoke alarms in our homes.

Three out of five home fire deaths resulted from fires with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. This is especially important if someone in your home smokes. Fires caused by smoking materials like ci******es are the leading cause of fire-related deaths, accounting for 23% of all fatalities.
