⚠️ Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Clearing Up a Dangerous Myth ⚠️
There is false information circulating online claiming that carbon monoxide (CO) detectors don’t react fast enough to be useful. This statement is misleading and unsafe.
CO detectors are designed to alarm based on time and concentration, not at the first trace of CO. This is intentional and based on medical and safety research.
✅ Low, brief CO levels are not immediately life‑threatening
✅ Dangerous or sustained levels will trigger the alarm before severe harm occurs
✅ This design prevents constant nuisance alarms while still protecting lives
🚨 CO detectors are calibrated to alert you before carbon monoxide reaches deadly levels, not after. If detectors alarm instantly at very low spikes, people would disable them—creating a far greater risk.
What actually prevents CO poisoning:
• Proper installation and annual maintenance of fuel‑burning appliances
• Keeping exhaust vents and chimneys clear
• Never using fuel‑burning equipment indoors or in garages
• Installing CO detectors on every level of the home and near sleeping areas
• Testing detectors regularly and replacing expired units
🛑 CO detectors are not defective because they don’t alarm immediately. They are functioning exactly as designed to provide accurate, reliable protection.
Carbon monoxide is invisible, odorless, and deadly — working CO detectors and well‑maintained appliances save lives. Misinformation puts people at risk.
Please help keep your family and community safe by sharing accurate information.
