Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park is the world's longest elevated pedestrian bridge spanning 1.28 miles across the Hudson River between Poughkeepsie and Highland, New York. Walkway Over the Hudson opened as a legacy project of the Hudson Fulton Champlain Quadricentennial. The park provides access to the Hudson River's breathtaking landscape for pedestrians, hikers, joggers, bicyclists, a

nd people with disabilities. The bridge deck stands 212 feet above the river's surface and is 6,768 feet (1.28 miles) long, making it the longest elevated pedestrian bridge in the world. The Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge was built in the late 19th century to link New York and New England to an extensive, nationwide railway network. For decades, it was a major rail corridor for both freight and passengers. After a fire in 1974, the bridge was abandoned and sat for decades as an orphaned relic. This brand new park was made possible due to the unwavering commitment of the community, who, through a non-profit organization called Walkway Over the Hudson, forged a public private partnership involving the State of New York, the federal government, neighboring municipalities, private corporations and other not for profit groups. The amazing result of this wonderful partnership is a brand new state park, now open for all to enjoy. There are two entrances to the park, one on either side of the Hudson River each with their own unique approach:

East of the Hudson (Poughkeepsie/Dutchess County):

DIRECTIONS:
By train: Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park is located just 4 blocks north of the Metro North and Amtrak station in Poughkeepsie. Bear right onto Washington Street. Proceed on Washington Street for 0.5 miles. Turn left on Route 9G/Parker Avenue. Walkway's parking lot is on the left side. West of the River (Highland/Ulster County):
87 Haviland Rd. Highland, NY 12528

DIRECTIONS:
Located just north of the Mid-Hudson Bridge Take NY 218/Route 9W to Haviland Road. Accessible parking (permit only) is provided in a small parking lot (on left, approx. 0.5 miles). All other parking is along the north side Haviland Road. PETS:
Household pets only; must be on a leash not more than four feet long.

👋 MEET LIONEL DURANT 👋

He's a retired United States Marine Corps reservist, satellite communications expert, and drone pilot. But these days, Lionel can be found with a decidedly slower mode of transportation: the Walkway's 11-passenger, ADA accessible electric tram.

Behind the wheel, Lionel does more than help visitors get from one side of the park to the other. He welcomes first-time guests, points out Hudson Valley landmarks, swaps stories with regulars, and meets people from around the world — including cyclists from France and ship captains from Canada.

“It’s a blessing to get to give people the lay of the land and outline the many things to see and do in the Hudson Valley,” Lionel says. “I’m happy to be a part of the Walkway, and love all the new people I get to meet.”

This year, thanks to foundational support from Rutberg Breslow Personal Injury Law, Friends of the Walkway is able to offer tram service seven days a week for the first time, weather permitting, with Lionel working alongside our dedicated volunteer Ambassadors to keep it rolling.

So when you see the tram coming on your next Walkway visit, give Lionel a wave. Or hop aboard and say hello! Chances are, he’ll have a story to share.

🎶 TWILIGHT MUSIC FINALE: DORRAINE SCOFIELD 🎵

For the final time this season, NY State Parks & Historic Sites is welcoming a talented musician into the park to bring Walkway Over the Hudson’s Ulster Welcome Center Plaza to life with free live music from 6-7 p.m.

Join us on Wednesday, August 26 as Dorraine Scofield closes our 2026 Twilight Music in the Parks series in style.

The concert is open to everyone and suitable for all ages. Bring your own chairs and blankets, and plenty of water to drink!

🔗 FRIDAY, AUGUST 21: FUN, FREE EVENT FOR KIDS! 🔗

Discover how trees become boats on Friday, August 21 from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. at Walkway Over the Hudson’s East Gate Plaza in Poughkeepsie!

Join Caitlin Chung of Hudson River Sloop Clearwater for a fun, hands-on exploration of the trees growing all around us. Kids will learn how different trees grow, investigate what makes their wood unique, and understand why some types of wood are better for certain jobs than others.

Then, find out how shipbuilders put those differences to work! Using the historic Sloop Clearwater as an example, Caitlin will show how shipwrights choose different woods to build, repair, and care for a real wooden sailing ship on the Hudson River.

Come ready to explore, ask questions, and see trees – and boats – in a whole new way!

All Walkway Connections events are free to attend and appropriate for all ages. Walkway Connections is supported in part by the Maurice D. Hinchey Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area and The M&T Charitable Foundation.

🌠 FRIDAY, AUGUST 21: EXPERIENCE THE HUDSON VALLEY IN A WHOLE NEW LIGHT 🌙✨

This Friday, take your evening stroll 212 feet above the Hudson during Walkway at Night. First, stop by the Ulster Welcome Center in Highland from 6-8 p.m. and enjoy a free outdoor concert by the Lara Hope Band. Bring chairs and blankets! Then head onto the Walkway to watch the last light fade over the river, see Poughkeepsie and Highland begin to sparkle, and experience Walkway At Night.

🔭 Weather permitting, the Mid-Hudson Astronomical Association will be on the bridge with telescopes for an up-close look at the night sky.

🎶 TWO CONCERTS ON THE WALKWAY THIS WEEK! 🎵

On Wednesday, August, join us for Twilight Music In The Parks as The Crew Duo takes the stage from 6-7 p.m.

On Friday, August 21 experience the Lara Hope Band from 6-8 p.m. prior to Walkway At Night from 8-9:30. RSVP to experience the bridge after dark at the link in our bio.

Concerts are free to attend, open to everyone, and suitable for all ages. Bring your own chairs and blankets! Both events take place at the Ulster Welcome Center in Highland (87 Haviland Road).

Some stories deserve a permanent place on the Walkway.

Along the bridge’s northern railing, bronze medallions honor the people, families, and organizations whose generosity and dedication have helped shape Walkway Over the Hudson. Each custom-engraved marker becomes part of the park forever.

A medallion can celebrate someone special, commemorate a lasting legacy, or recognize a group that has made a meaningful difference. Gifts supporting these dedications help Friends of the Walkway invest in major improvements, engaging programs, and a welcoming park experience for more than 600,000 visitors each year.

Each new medallion is unveiled during a special ceremony with family and friends, creating another memory in a place already filled with them.
