Cider Mill Friends of Open Space & Historic Preservation

Cider Mill Friends of Open Space & Historic Preservation Cider Mill Friends is restoring the c.1880 Kimlin Cider Mill. An old mid-19th century barn forms the core the Kimlin Cider Mill. Mr.

The organization started in 2000 as a citizens group, incorporated as a non-profit in 2001, and purchased the Mill in 2008. The Kimlin Cider Mill is located on the east side of Cedar Avenue in the Town of Poughkeepsie, situated on approximately two acres of land. The mill was part of a larger agricultural property owned and operated by the Kimlin family since the early 1850's when the Kimlin famil

y first came to this country from Ireland, though now its initial function and historical associations are unclear. During the period of 1925-1935, Ralph R. Kimlin began the work of expanding the old barn into what he intended to be a cider mill as well as a public attraction. Kimlin's work on the barn greatly altered the original form and composition of the building, which he intended to make into, amoung other things, a museum filled old farm tools and other curiosities. For most of the 20th century the Cider Mill served as a producer and retail outlet for apple cider. Its popularity with local residents, particularly the area's school children and students from nearly Vassar College, prompted Ralph R. Kimlin to embellish the exterior of the building and to create indoor spaces for the enchantment of his customers. The property surrounding the Mill soon became a park. Kimlin also raised a sizable flock of sheep in the pasture behind the Mill with the hopes of preserving the traditional farm life that once an integral part of life in the area, but which was already beginning to disappear at the time. The Cider Mill Friends of Open Space & Historic Preservation, Inc. began as a citizens' group in May 2000 and in January 2001 became a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization. Cider Mill Friends pursued the purchase of the Kimlin Cider Mill for seven years. On February 20, 2008, the Cider Mill Friends became the official owners of the Mill and surrounding 1.8 acres of meadowland with the assistance of a bridge loan from the Preservation League of New York State, a matching grant from New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, private lenders, and donors.

We launched our brand refresh earlier this week in honor of the 25 year anniversary of Cider Mill Friends. πŸŽ‰ We wanted to thank our talented and creative partners who helped us with logo development over the years.

The new logo and the 25th anniversary branding were designed by Claire Wajda, who is both a graphic designer and on the Cider Mill Friends Advisory Board. You can check her out online at clairewajda.com. We want to profusely thank Claire for volunteering her time and expertise to this rebranding and many other graphic works over the past several years.

We also want to recognize the designers who worked with us to design our logos over the years.

In 2012, Stephen Burgess, then a Dutchess Community College student, volunteered his time and expertise to design the logo we used for the past 14 years. His idea, which continues today, is a logo using a stylized line drawing of the cider mill.

And we also want to thank Ivars Sprogis whose watercolor painting of the cider mill was our logo for the first 11 years of our group.

Cheers to another 25 years and beyond! πŸ₯‚πŸŽ

🚨New logo alert 🚨

This year our country celebrates 250 years and Cider Mill Friends celebrates 25 years! In honor of this quarter-century anniversary, we have updated our logo and created a special anniversary logo for the milestone year. Keep your eyes out for these logos on new merchandise and the tasting glass at our annual cider tasting event in October.

This brand refresh is inspired by the feeling of the vintage images of the cider mill and the typography that was used on past Kimlin Cider labels. The anniversary logo includes a custom β€˜25’ that includes a special detail in the counter of the 5; do you see it? (🍎).
