👮‍♂️🏆 HERO OFFICER HONORED

The City of Poughkeepsie’s Common Council has voted unanimously to recognize retired Police Officer Michael Barbagallo as the City’s 2026 Hero of the Year.

In February, Officer Barbagallo was first on the scene of a house fire. Without any protective firefighting gear, he ran into the burning building and evacuated several residents before firefighters arrived.

During this week’s Common Council meeting, Officer Barbagallo reunited with one of the women he saved that day. In another selfless act, Barbagallo gave her the $500 award he received from a local radio station for his heroism and service to the community.

Congratulations—and thank you, Officer Barbagallo, for always putting others first! 👏

🚗⚠️ PUBLIC SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENT

The City of Poughkeepsie is lowering the citywide speed limit to 25 mph starting September 1—just before the new school year, when hundreds of kids will be walking to school.

The goal is simple: make our streets safer and save lives.

There will be a period of public education and outreach to give residents and drivers time to adjust to the new speed limit.

The Common Council voted to adopt the reduced speed limit after a study by the Dutchess County Transportation Council examined crash data throughout the city.

The arterials are state roadways and are not subject to the reduced citywide speed limit. However, the City is working with the state to step up speed enforcement, including speed cameras in school zones and red light cameras at the city’s busiest intersections.

🚒🔥 Today, Vincent "Vinny" Parise was officially sworn in as the City of Poughkeepsie’s new Fire Chief! Born and raised in Poughkeepsie, Chief Parise has dedicated his life to protecting our community, and he takes the helm after nearly 25 years of service to his hometown.

Congratulations, Chief Parise! The City is proud to have you leading Poughkeepsie’s Bravest! 👏

🚒🔥 The City of Poughkeepsie’s Bravest have a new leader!

Fire Chief Vinny Parise will be officially sworn in at City Hall on Monday, August 17 at 2:00 p.m.

Born and raised right here in Poughkeepsie and a proud Poughkeepsie High School graduate, Parise answered the call to serve his hometown and became a firefighter just four days after the 9/11 attacks.

Through courage, dedication, and over two decades of service, he rose through the ranks to become Deputy Chief under Chief Joe Franco.

Last year, Parise stepped up as Acting Chief and proved he was ready to lead our brave firefighters.

National Night Out was amazing! 💙🚔👮‍♀️👮‍♂️

We had an incredible turnout at City Hall. A huge THANK YOU to the dedicated men and women of the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department who grilled hot dogs for the big crowd and gave kids an up-close look at their SWAT vehicles, tactical robot, drones, and so much more.

We also want to give a shoutout to everyone who came out! Your support and enthusiasm showed the power of building stronger relationships between our community and the officers who put their lives on the line every day to protect us.

🚒👏 After 31 years of dedicated service to the City of Poughkeepsie, Fire Chief Joe Franco has officially hung up his helmet — leaving behind a legacy of leadership, courage, and commitment to our community.

Chief Franco began his career as a dispatcher in 1995, went on to serve as a firefighter, and rose through the ranks to become Chief in 2022. Along the way, he strengthened the department, inspired those around him, and earned the respect of firefighters, City employees, and residents alike.

The City of Poughkeepsie is deeply grateful for Chief Franco’s more than three decades of selfless service. Thank you, Chief, for answering the call, leading with integrity, and making a lasting impact on our community. ❤️🚒

🌫️⚠️WILDFIRE SMOKE: We're dealing with another day of orange-brown, hazy skies and unhealthy air quality from wildfires burning in Canada.

💙🏊 165 kids in our community are learning to swim this summer, thanks to FREE lessons provided by our amazing Parks & Recreation Department!

A huge shoutout to our City’s incredible lifeguards for giving these young swimmers the confidence and crucial water safety skills they’ll carry for the rest of their lives.

Thank you for making a difference, one child and one lesson at a time! 🌊👏
