Earlier today, we arrested Preston Alaniz after he made additional threats to kill his neighbors. Although he attempted to elude law enforcement by cutting through yards and avoiding main streets, vigilant community members helped tracked his movements. Thanks to these callers, officers located and apprehended him in the brush at the back of an empty lot on Avenue H.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the residents who reported his whereabouts and helped pinpoint his location, ensuring a swift resolution to this incident.

Early this morning, we received an anonymous call reporting that two toddlers had been left home alone while their mother, Angelina Herrera, visited a boyfriend in San Antonio.

Officers responded immediately but received no answer at the door. Dispatch subsequently received additional calls regarding the incident, including a report that the mother was en route back to the residence.

Shortly thereafter, Atascosa Deputies conducted an unrelated traffic stop on a vehicle for speeding. The driver, Angelina Herrera, was arrested and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance, Penalty Group 2.

Simultaneously, another family member arrived at the residence and provided entry for our officers. They confirmed that the toddlers were unharmed and still asleep.

In addition to the narcotics charge, Angelina has been charged with two counts of Abandoning or Endangering a Child.

Late last night, Poteet officers responded to a theft at the 500 block of Avenue J. The suspect was identified as Richard Berrones, who was subsequently arrested and transported to the Atascosa County Jail.

Upon arrival at the jail, it was discovered that Berrones had hidden ma*****na on his person and failed to notify the arresting officer.

As a result, Berrones was charged and booked for Theft, Possession of Ma*****na, and Prohibited Substance in a Correctional Facility.

Earlier this evening, officers conducted a traffic stop on a reckless driver. During the investigation, it was discovered that the driver did not possess a valid driver's license, the vehicle was uninsured, and the driver was in possession of methamphetamine along with open containers of alcohol.

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension is hosting a FREE car seat and booster seat inspection event for families in our community!

Families can have their child’s car seat or booster seat checked to make sure it is installed and being used correctly. A limited number of car seats will also be available for families who qualify.

Today, we responded to a call in the 600 block of North 5th Street regarding a shopping cart full of DVDs abandoned in the road.

While at the scene, we met Derrick "DK" and Alinaha "Beans." They received police stickers and got a tour of Officer Koepke's and Sergeant Permenter's patrol cars, where they had fun testing out the lights and sirens. After comparing both vehicles, DK and Beans officially voted that Sgt Permenter's patrol car was the better one.
