Scioto County Amateur Radio Emergency Services Scioto County (ARES) Emergency Coordinator (EC) is Chris Kemper KB8IIH. Trustees are Jerry Swords, Danny Edwards and Gary Stephenson.

Secretary / Treasurer is Larry Mullins. Scioto County ARES is a group of dedicated ham radio operators who donate their time and expertise to their communities to provide emergency communications in times of crisis. Their repeater is located at 145.45. Public safety agencies utilize the ARES organization to establish a critical link to facilities and personnel essential for response and recovery f

rom emergency situations and disasters. Plans have been developed that provide for ARES volunteers to provide emergency communications when regular means of communications have been disrupted. Their dedication ensures public safety organizations can provide missions to protect the welfare of the citizens in Scioto County.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for much of the area. Showers and storms will move through ahead of a cold front this afternoon. Damaging winds are the main threat.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for northeast Kentucky, northern Kentucky, central Ohio, south central Ohio, southwest Ohio and west central Ohio.

Thunderstorms are expected to develop on Sunday ahead of a cold front. A few of the storms may become strong to severe during the day. Damaging winds and hail will be the primary threats.

A strong low may bring gusty winds along with the chance for showers and thunderstorms Wednesday and Thursday.

After a lull in activity on Saturday, an active pattern will set up again in the Ohio Valley. 3-5 inches of rain are expected over the next 7 days, with some locally higher amounts possible. Action and Minor Flood Stage rises are ongoing across southeastern Illinois and portions of Indiana. More river rises to Action-Minor Flood Stage are possible with upcoming rain over the next 10 days.

According to the NWS in Wilmington, OH…temperatures will be rising into the upper 80s to around 90, and will result in the heat index approaching 100 degrees this afternoon. Be sure to take precautions, especially if you will be spending time outdoors.

A cold front will approach the area late tonight and cross the region early Friday. While storms should be weakening as they approach the area tonight, there is some possibility that a few could still have strong to damaging winds.

Extreme heat is one of the deadliest weather hazards in the United States. Preparing ahead of time can help protect you when temperatures soar.

Stay Hydrated
• Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty.
• Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and sugary drinks, which can contribute to dehydration.
• Increase water intake when working or exercising outdoors.

Keep Your Home Cool
• Use air conditioning whenever possible.
• Close blinds, curtains, and shades during the hottest part of the day.
• Use fans but remember that fans alone may not prevent heat-related illness.
• Identify cooling centers or public buildings where you can cool off if needed.

Dress for the Heat
• Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing.
• Use sunscreen and wear a wide-brimmed hat when outdoors.
• Limit activities during the hottest hours of the day, typically 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Check on Others
• Check on the elderly, neighbors, family and those with medical conditions.
• Ensure individuals without air conditioning have access to a cool environment.
• Never leave children, older adults, or pets in a parked vehicle.

According to the NWS in Wilmington, OH…the humid air mass will remain in place. This combined with temperatures rising into the upper 80s to around 90 both today and tomorrow will result in the heat index approaching 100. Being the first hot days of the year, it may take some time to get acclimated. So, the effects of the heat may be greater than later in the summer. Be sure to take precautions, especially if you will be spending time outdoors.
