Thank you Renew Hercampus for the invitation to yesterday’s Meet & Greet, an opportunity to learn more about your service to women in our community as they rebuild their lives.

Through mentorship, financial literacy, job readiness, parenting classes, housing resources, and reentry support, Renew Her is helping create pathways to hope and opportunity for women and families.

Councilman Mark Hugel and I were able to meet volunteers and hear testimony from program participants.

Follow RenewHER Campus for more information and ways to support their work.

Thank you to the Portsmouth Economic Development team for last night’s update on our waterfront redevelopment project at Crawford Bay.

The project is moving forward with Requests for Proposals this month. Three developers—one local, one regional, and one national—will be invited to submit plans following the Request for Qualifications process.

Last night’s update follows public input sessions held earlier this year. Based on community feedback, developers will be asked to propose mixed-use projects for the six-acre site.

Along with providing details about the three development teams, the EDA provided an opportunity for residents to ask questions and learn more about the project.

The project remains on schedule for developer selection by the end of the year. After decades of discussion and delays, that is encouraging progress.

Economic Development Director Brian Donahue told the audience, “This is one of the most important projects in our city’s history,” adding that the project will increase our tax base while energizing and activating our waterfront.

Wuestions may be submitted through the project website: portsmouthvaecondev.com/developments/crawford-bay

Three Updates from Last Night’s Council Meeting:

1. Downtown Parking

We continued discussing a new parking plan for downtown, aimed at improving parking availability, updating technology, supporting local businesses, and maintaining accessibility for residents and visitors. Based on public feedback, council and staff continued refining options and identifying areas where additional adjustments may be needed. We expect an ordinance for consideration soon and will continue sharing information as details are finalized.

2. Blighted & Derelict Properties Ordinance

We reviewed a proposed ordinance aimed at addressing blighted and derelict properties. This would add another tool—alongside existing inspections—to encourage property owners to make improvements and maintain safe, well-kept neighborhoods.

3. Government 101 Graduation

We celebrated the graduation of the third cohort of Government 101, a free nine-week program that connects residents and city employees with a deeper understanding of how local government works and how services are delivered. Graduates become great ambassadors for our city and we look forward to continuing the program this fall.

Coming up: An opportunity to engage —

Join our Portsmouth Economic Development for a public information session Thursday at 6 pm at The Mustard Seed Place for updates on the waterfront redevelopment project at Crawford Bay. The project is on track and this meeting is a great way to learn more about what’s ahead.

Calling the bicentennial graduation class of I.C. Norcom High School. 📣

New landscaping at the Portsmouth Art & Cultural Center highlights this time capsule buried July 4, 1976.

We’re halfway to the big reveal, set for July 2076! In the meantime, celebrate our nation’s 250th milestone with festivities downtown and along our waterfront June 19-22. 🇺🇸
