We’re fortunate to have partners who believe in this work and invest in a stronger, healthier community.

Recently, our Executive Director, Anne Hayes, and Director of Institutional Giving and Communications, Rebecca Barnwell, welcomed Jocelyn Lencki and Jeff Jackson from Eversource NH for a tour of our Community Food Center. They were able to get an inside look at our warehouse and operations, Cooking 4 Community production kitchen, Culinary Classroom and Pantry Market, seeing firsthand how Gather is working across the Seacoast to make nourishing food more accessible.

We’re thankful for Eversource NH’s recent gift to Gather, which will help fund our innovative programs and ensure we can continue building food security in dignified and welcoming ways.

Have you heard of the Three Sisters?

The Three Sisters is an Indigenous agricultural tradition that brings together corn, beans, and squash, with each plant playing an important role in helping the others thrive.

Here’s how they work together:

🌽 Corn grows tall, creating a natural trellis for beans to climb.

🫘 Beans work with beneficial bacteria in the soil to add nitrogen, an essential nutrient that helps feed the other crops.

🍈 Squash spreads along the ground, helping suppress weeds while shading the soil and conserving moisture.

This year, our Gardening and Gleaning team planted our own Three Sisters garden with sweet corn, pole beans, and a variety of squash-family plants, including delicata, acorn, and butternut squash, along with cantaloupe.

You can see this tradition in action at our Gather-managed gardens at Timberland where the harvest is helping nourish our community. Fresh produce makes its way to our markets for members to enjoy, while some is also used by our Cooking 4 Community team to create nutritious, ready-to-eat meals.

Shout out to volunteers from AmeriHealth Caritas New Hampshire who recently spent an afternoon with our Cooking 4 Community team in our production kitchen, prepping and packing snack boxes that are distributed as a part of Portsmouth Housing Authority's "Making Classroom and Community Connections" initiative — also known as MC3.

From chopping a variety of colorful fruits and veggies to portioning cheese and protein, packaging hummus, and more, their hard work helps ensure kids living in Portsmouth's Gosling Meadows community have easy access to nourishing, ready-to-eat foods. Thank you, AmeriHealth Caritas New Hampshire!

Funding for the MC3 program was awarded to the Portsmouth Housing Authority (PHA) to support children and families living in its residential communities. PHA partnered with Gather and the Portsmouth School District to coordinate the initiative, which provides meals to children residing in the Gosling Meadows community. The MC3 program is supported through grant funding, with the three organizations working closely together to ensure resources reach the families the program is designed to serve.

We were so happy to welcome a group from the Krempels Brain Injury Center into our culinary classroom for a Cooking Matters class!

The group learned from our Associate Director of Culinary, Shelley, about nutrition and making healthy food choices on a budget, before getting hands-on in the kitchen with Chef Instructor Tim. Together, they prepared turkey tacos and learned how to stretch their leftovers into a delicious turkey chili.

Using a variety of adaptive kitchen tools, including our height-adjustable workstations that can be customized to individual needs, everyone had a chance to get involved. The group chopped bell peppers, tomatoes, cilantro, and more as they worked together to prepare a delicious meal.

We’re so glad we could welcome Krempels into our classroom and look forward to more opportunities to cook, learn, and connect together!
