PORTOLA EARNS “CLEAN CALIFORNIA COMMUNITY” DESIGNATION

We are proud to announce that we have earned the designation as a “Clean California Community” from the Caltrans’ Clean CA initiative.

The process began in June of 2025 with approval and direction of the City Council to pursue the designation. Taking the lead on this effort, our Public Engagement Officer, Brian Attama, rallied more than 25 volunteers over the last 11 months to implement an array of long-term activities in support of litter removal and prevention, beautification and environmental enhancement.

In recognition of our dedication to a cleaner community, we will receive “Clean California Community” signage, educational resources, automatic membership with Keep California Beautiful and recognition in statewide releases and Clean California materials.

We are deeply grateful for our volunteers, partners, and community members whose continued commitment helps make our community a place we can all be proud to call our home.

For full details on the designation and other general updates on City endeavors please see The Plumas Sun article attached to this post.

Rumors that Portola is getting cleaned up are true: The city has been named a Clean California Community, the first in Plumas County. The Clean California

Portola Firewise Green Waste Cleanup this Saturday!

Common out and help your neighbors as we continue to work diligently to protect our community against the threat of wildfire.

Let’s keep Portola fire-safe and beautiful! 🌲🔥

The Portola Firewise Community is hosting a Green Waste Clean-up Event on Saturday, June 6th, and they need YOUR help! Whether you're a volunteer ready to lend a hand or a City of Portola resident needing assistance clearing yard debris, this is a fantastic community effort to reduce fire hazard risks.

🙋‍♂️ FOR VOLUNTEERS:
Help neighbors rake, gather, or haul green waste!

When: Saturday, June 6th | 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Where: Meet at Portola City Park (near the pool parking lot) at 7:30 AM.

What to Bring: Your energy, gloves, and personal protective equipment (PPE).

The Perks: Arrive early for donuts at 7:30 AM! 🍩 The Plumas County Fire Safe Council will provide a tool trailer, and Portola Rotary is treating all volunteers to an amazing lunch afterward featuring pulled pork, chicken salad, and more!

🏡 FOR RESIDENTS NEEDING HELP:
Do you live within the City of Portola limits and need assistance clearing pine needles/woody waste or having premade piles hauled away?

Deadline to request help: Friday, May 29th.

Bonus: The Fire Safe Council is offering a limited number of home hardening assessments for those who sign up!

(Note: This free disposal program is available to City of Portola residents only).

📲 HOW TO SIGN UP (Volunteers & Residents):
Scan the QR code on the attached flyer OR call the air district at 530-832-0102 ext. 3 (please leave a voicemail!).

🗓️ WANT TO HELP PLAN?
Join the Firewise team for their next planning meeting this Thursday at 6:00 PM at the Portola Library. New volunteers and leaders are always welcome!

A huge thank you to Portola Firewise, Northern Sierra AQMD, Plumas County Fire Safe Council, and Portola Rotary for making this event possible. Let’s show up for our neighbors! 💪

05/30/2026 Community Cleanup

This previous Saturday we held a Community Cleanup event. A huge thank you to the 9 volunteers who took time out of their Saturday morning to address some targeted areas throughout the City. The team was able to remove roughly 4 cubic yards of rubbish from the area!

We also want to extend our gratitude to Plumas Bank and Plumas-Sierra Rural Electric Cooperative for their donated prizes.

Lastly, a special thank you to the "Litter Advisory Committee" who has continued to contribute immensely to our endeavors:

Tom Medford
Rachel Brubaker
Ann-Claire Benoit
Kristen Attama
John Cannon

We anticipate holding another Community Cleanup event this fall. Stay tuned!
