Heat & Wildfire Smoke Research Project

Sharing with our community members in Plumas!!

Desert Research Institute (DRI) and Northern Nevada Public Health are working on a research project focused on how extreme heat and wildfire smoke affect people’s health, especially in homes without central air conditioning.

The study is looking for adult participants in Plumas County and Washoe County. Researchers will make a few scheduled home visits over the course of the year to place simple indoor and outdoor air quality sensors, check basic heart and lung health, and learn more about how smoke and heat impact daily life. Participants ideally will not have air conditioning in their home.

Participants can receive up to $300 in gift cards, and all personal information remains private.

This research will help scientists and public health officials better understand how to protect rural communities during increasingly hot and smoky summers.
