Raphael House of Portland

Raphael House of Portland Listen. Believe. Speak out. An additional 400 survivors receive non-residential advocacy services each year.

Raphael House of Portland is a multi-faceted domestic violence prevention and intervention agency dedicated to fighting the causes and effects of intimate partner violence in a variety of ways. Founded in 1977, we offer emergency shelter in a confidential location, safety planning and advocacy on a 24-hour in-house crisis line, and long-term supportive services through our Home In Hand Housing Pro

gram and Advocacy Center. Nearly 100 families are served in the emergency shelter each year, and over 5,000 callers are offered safety planning and advocacy on our crisis line. Raphael House also works to enact social change and prevent domestic violence by offering free educational workshops to thousands of teens and adults in the Portland area annually. The mission of Raphael House is to provide a foundation of hope for a life free from family violence, and we have been working in this community—offering domestic violence survivors the tools they need to build violence-free lives—for more than 45 years. Raphael House serves a diverse community of women and children escaping domestic violence, and also works to eliminate the causes of family and intimate partner violence through community education and outreach.

Happy Juneteenth! Did you know that the celebration of this holiday was first brought to Oregon by Clara Peoples in 1945?

She moved from Oklahoma to work in Portland’s shipyards and was surprised her coworkers didn’t know about the holiday commemorating the day the abolition of slavery was finally enforced in Texas – over 2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

She and other community organizers helped start the Juneteenth Oregon Festival in 1972, which has been held annually for over 50 years!

The Clara Peoples Freedom Trail Parade is at 11am SATURDAY at King Elementary School and the festival is from 12-7 at Lillis-Albina Park.

We’re SO proud that Alicia Rios, our Housing Advocate of 21 years (!!!), received the UNICA Service Award from El Programa Hispano – in recognition of her valuable contributions and long-term dedication to serving Latine survivors of domestic violence.

She shared, “I feel proud of all the families that have given me the privilege to work with them and to help them. We are together. I don’t see myself as teaching anyone anything, I see myself as learning with them.”

!Felicidades Alicia! And thank you for your many years of fierce advocacy.

Our team was lucky to enjoy a special, on-site printmaking class with our Alumni Board Member, artist, and art teacher Theresa Weil! 🎨

She helped us explore line and mark-making drawings to create printed cards with styrofoam plates.

It was wonderful to pause, connect, and get creative together – especially as our staff works so hard to keep Raphael House of Portland programs available for survivors 24/7.

Did you know there’s now a comprehensive resource space for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse in Washington County?

The Family Peace Center, (previously called The Family Justice Center of Washington County) which opened in April, houses over 20 organizations to provide medical, legal, advocacy, and therapeutic childcare services – along with food, clothing, and more – all in one location.

Their Executive Director Rachel Schutz said they aim to “prevent violence cycling through future generations… We’ll be able to offer everything survivors need under ONE roof, with dignity, safety, and a supportive community.”
