Hello, my name is Evie Halloran. I’m a rising junior interested in studying law. I’m working with OLCV as a youth intern to protect Oregon’s environment. For our social media takeover, I thought I’d share about environmental issues affecting Oregon waterways like the Columbia and how the salmon populations residing inside them are affected.

Rivers are a cornerstone of Oregon communities, and caring for them benefits all of us. The salmon that live in these rivers have been a vital first food for the indigenous nations of Oregon since time immemorial.

To learn more about what’s threatening these rivers and the communities that surround them, check out my infographic!

Hi, my name is Jackson Laib, and I am a rising senior. I joined OLCV as a youth intern because I care about environmental issues. I know plenty of kids my age who are passionate about environmental issues, but don’t know where to put that energy. I hope that this post can help people who feel like that find resources to help get them started on fighting for our environment!

Hi! I’m Atharva, an OLCV youth intern taking over today to talk about something hiding in millions of kitchens and homes: methane gas.

The gas industry has spent years presenting “natural gas” as a clean, environmentally friendly fuel. But “natural gas” is a fancy term for what it really is: methane.

Methane can leak throughout the gas system, from extraction sites and pipelines to appliances inside our homes. And when gas appliances burn fuel indoors, they can release pollutants. These pollutants can irritate our airways and worsen respiratory conditions, including asthma and bronchitis.

Swipe to discover what we can replace our old gas infrastructure with.

Hi, I am Milena, one of the youth interns for OLCV. I am currently studying environmental sciences, and I am guest-posting for OLCV this August because I have seen the impacts climate change has had on my community and local ecosystems.

The Critical Energy Infrastructure (CEI) Hub is located in NW Portland and is a 6-mile stretch of aging fuel tanks, built several decades ago. It sits along the Willamette River, which is already burdened by industrial contamination. When the Cascadia earthquake hits, it won’t just be an environmental disaster, it will also be a major public health crisis for our communities. Swipe through to learn more!

💫😵 Deja vu! The Trump Administration is attacking the Roadless Rule again!

The public comment period is open until Mon, Sept 21st. Make sure your voice is heard.

The Roadless Rule protects some of the most intact wildlands providing clean drinking water for 1 in 10 Oregonians, and millions of Americans nationwide. They also provide wildlife habitat, boundless recreation, and preserve sacred sites and traditional foods for Indigenous communities. We must uphold the Roadless Rule to protect these lands now and for future generations.

Don't let these protections get stripped away: submit your public comment today.

OLCV Youth Interns are taking over!

OLCV has a team of high school interns who will be posting content that they’ve created themselves. The posts will cover a range of environmental health issues related to climate that are important to each of them.

Young people will be most affected by climate change, and they deserve to have a voice. Each year, we make space on our OLCV social media platforms to help amplify youth voices.

Our feeds may look a little different over the next couple of weeks. We hope you enjoy some youth perspective on the issues we all care so much about.
