🗳️ International Day of Democracy | 15 September

Protecting journalism and the safety of journalists is essential to protecting democracy.

A free and independent press is one of the pillars of democratic societies. Journalists play a vital role in informing citizens, holding institutions accountable and enabling people to participate meaningfully in public life.

At a time when journalists and media freedom face increasing threats and civic space is under pressure, protecting journalism means protecting democracy itself.

🇷🇴 In 2026, Romania is taking concrete action to support this principle. Romania has provided a voluntary contribution of RON 64,830 to the Council of Europe Platform to Promote the Protection of Journalism and Safety of Journalists.

The contribution is included in Romania's 2026 Annual Plan for International Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Assistance, in its revised version, approved by the Government of Romania on 6 August 2026.

The Platform is the main pan-European mechanism for monitoring, analysing and responding to serious threats to journalists and media freedom. It is a partnership between the Council of Europe and major organisations working to protect press freedom.

Its beneficiaries are journalists, media organisations and other media professionals — but ultimately, all citizens benefit from the right to receive and share information and to make informed democratic choices.

Democracy needs informed citizens.
Informed citizens need independent journalism.
And independent journalism needs protection.

🇷🇴 Romania remains committed to supporting democratic values, media freedom and the safety of journalists — at home and through international cooperation.

🚒 Romanian Firefighters’ Day | 13 September

Today, Romania honours its firefighters — the men and women whose courage, professionalism and dedication protect lives and communities every day.

The date of 13 September carries a special significance in Romanian history, commemorating the Battle of Dealul Spirii of 1848, when the Bucharest firefighters, led by Captain Pavel Zăgănescu, fought with remarkable courage in defence of their country.

Today, Romanian firefighters continue this tradition of service, responding not only to fires, but also to accidents, floods, natural disasters and countless other emergencies where every second can make a difference.

On Romanian Firefighters’ Day, we salute their courage and commitment and extend our appreciation to firefighters and emergency responders everywhere — including our colleagues and friends in Sri Lanka and the Maldives — who dedicate themselves to keeping communities safe.

🚒 To all firefighters: thank you for your courage and service!

La mulți ani pompierilor români! 🇷🇴

Ms. Mihaela Rutjens, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Embassy of Romania in Sri Lanka, recently met with Mr. Iuliu Stocklosa, President of the Bucharest Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIB), at the CCIB headquarters in Bucharest.

The discussions focused on opportunities to further develop economic and business relations between Romania and Sri Lanka, including through the recently established CCIB Representative Office in Colombo.

Particular attention was given to Sri Lanka Expo 2027, as well as the possibility of facilitating a Romanian multisectoral business delegation to Sri Lanka, with the aim of creating new B2B connections and identifying opportunities for trade and investment.

With 2027 marking 70 years of diplomatic relations between Romania and Sri Lanka, the Embassy of Romania sees economic cooperation as an important component of this longstanding partnership and looks forward to working with Romanian and Sri Lankan business institutions to further strengthen these ties.

🇷🇴🌍 ROMANIAN DIPLOMACY DAY | 1 SEPTEMBER

On 1 September, Romania marked Romanian Diplomacy Day, a moment to recognize the work and dedication of Romanian diplomats serving our country around the world.

This year, the occasion was marked by the Annual Meeting of Romanian Diplomacy (RADR 2026), held in Bucharest on 31 August–1 September under the theme “Diplomacy: an anchor in a changing world.”

In a rapidly changing international environment, diplomacy remains essential — building dialogue, strengthening partnerships, promoting cooperation and representing Romania’s interests abroad.

From Bucharest to our diplomatic missions around the world, Romanian diplomacy continues to connect people, countries and communities. 🇷🇴🤝🌍
