Not all solicitors and door-to-door contractors are visiting your home with honest intentions. Unfortunately, some people may use these opportunities to take advantage of storm damage situations.

Since Monday's hail storm, there have been a number of different companies speaking with home owners about hail damage and replacement of their roof.

We want to remind residents that the City of Portland requires all solicitors to have a valid solicitation permit (requiring a minor background check), regardless of whether they are selling a service or simply gathering information.

If someone comes to your door:
⌂ Ask to see their city-issued permit
⌂ Do not feel pressured to answer questions or agree to anything on the spot
⌂Be cautious about sharing personal or property information

If a solicitor cannot provide a permit or makes you feel uncomfortable, please contact the police department so we can follow up.

Heads up, folks—Mother Nature is doing her thing again. 🌧️

You may have noticed some localized flooding in the downtown area and our parks. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and National Weather Service (NWS), the Grand River is expected to rise another half foot or so before it starts to recede.

While this isn’t unusual for this time of year, it’s a good reminder to stay aware and use a little extra caution:

🚧 Avoid flooded areas – Even shallow water can be deeper (and moving faster) than it looks.
🚗 Turn around, don’t drown – Never drive through water covering the road.
🚶 Use caution on trails and sidewalks – Parks and river paths may be slippery or washed out.
🐾 Keep an eye on kids and pets – Fast-moving water and debris can be dangerous.
🚫 Respect barricades and closures

We’ll continue to keep an eye on conditions and share updates as needed.

New badges to celebrate the USA turning 250!

All of the officers purchased their own commemorative badges to wear for the remainder of 2026. The badges will be retired at the end of the year and kept as a career keepsake.

No emergency and no call for concern at this time – but sharing some interesting photos of the Lookingglass River to show how and why ice jams form. These photos were taken today, February 19, 2026.

Ice jams happen most frequently when our temps start to bounce up and down. Ice will often form around down trees or stumps, and as the ice breaks up, it might bring some of that naturally occurring debris along for the ride as the ice flows downstream. When the ice and debris hit a narrow bend, shallow spot or other debris, everything may stack up and temporarily slow down the flow of the river - causing more ice and debris (or unfortunately, water) to gather upstream.

UPDATE: 11:00AM - The alert from our regional electric grid operator, MISO, issued earlier today that prompted us to appeal to members to reduce their electric use has been suspended. Members may resume their typical use at this time.

The alert was the result of severe winter weather currently affecting large areas of MISO’s 15-state service area, causing disruptions in normal electric generation and transmission. MISO has since taken steps to reduce the risk of demand on the larger grid exceeding supply.

The alert had nothing to do with any problems with HomeWorks infrastructure or the availability of electricity from our supplier, Wolverine Power Cooperative. Instead, it was tied to our systems being part of the larger MISO grid.

We appreciate our members’ help in these situations. Rest assured, we will be monitoring the situation throughout the weekend and will provide updates if needed.

To learn more about MISO, visit: https://www.misoenergy.org.

UPDATE: 8:45AM - MISO has made an emergency energy purchase from a neighboring electric grid which has ended immediate concerns. However, the predicted weather may still impact the grid as the day goes on so any voluntary load reduction is appreciated. We will continue to update here, our website, and to all members via email.

*Please Conserve Energy*

Cold temps are straining the electric grid. MISO, our regional grid operator, has asked all utilities to encourage members to voluntarily reduce energy use starting immediately. Lower your thermostat, delay laundry, and keep doors and windows closed to conserve heat.

Together, we can help avoid rolling outages!

Extreme cold temperatures over the next few days will continue to expand the ice on all of our rivers. Ice Jams will be increasingly possible at any river locations that have not yet fully frozen up, including at some places that don't normally see river ice issues. Anyone living along the rivers should prepare now for potential rising water and ice jams.
