Happy National Cat Day! We'd like to give an extra shout out to our own feline volunteer Lilly. She is a Maine c**n cat who lives next door with her owner. She comes to the Mansion regularly to attend staff meetings, greet guests or just lounge on the back steps. Fun fact- we give the Lilly Award to a guide who has gone above and beyond during the year. They receive a Lilly pin in honor of their hard work.

With the Mansion as your muse, join Audrey Minutolo Le for this inspirational workshop.

The Victorians believed that the spirits spoke in quiet whispers through mediums, and that ‘auto-writing’ could channel messages from the beyond. The Victorians’ methods may not have been so much about channeling the spirits as they were about bypassing the conscious mind to tap into the deeper unconscious. With the historic Victoria Mansion as our muse, we will listen — not to the whispers of the spirits — but to a bit of Baroque music and the whispers of our hearts. Bring your curiosity about the writing process and spend an afternoon as the Victorians did: tapping into your deepest questions and truthful self-expression to receive messages you didn’t know were possible.

Audrey Minutolo Le teaches writing and literature at the University of Maine. Her work has been published by Down East, Persimmon Tree, the Audubon Society, and The Poet’s Corner, amongst others. Audrey offers individual and group writing workshops at Highland Grove Arts, nestled in the lakes and mountains region in Bridgton, Maine.

Tickets available on our website. victoriamansion.org/event/all-souls-writing-workshop/

We love seeing all the work that Mansion guide Erich has been doing for our friends over at Greater Portland Landmarks!

GPL had the pleasure of working with intern, Erich Chase last month. Erich completed a focused compilation and analysis of GPL walking tours, past and present as part of an effort to update our offerings and make them more accessible to the public. We asked him to tell our supporters a little about himself and the work he’s done here.

“I have a passion for local history and archaeology, and am a long-time volunteer turned paid guide at the Victoria Mansion here in Portland. I am about to begin my second year of graduate school (Master of Arts in Museology program at the University of Washington) and received a BA in Archaeology (Latin America) degree from Lycoming College in 2024.

“At Greater Portland Landmarks, I have been learning a lot of information relating to Portland’s various neighborhoods (along with their architectural styles). I have been working hard at consolidating walking tour information, as well as copying information from over 20 tours (finished and unfinished) tied to GPL into an Excel spreadsheet. Look for a future social media post where I’ll share one of my favorite houses in Portland.”
