Sylvan Heights & Arlington Heights, hosting your neighborhood association meeting at the Hoyt Arboretum was a real treat. Thank you for having me.

I make it a point to attend as many neighborhood association meetings as I can. Having the opportunity to chat and connect with Portlanders is one of my favorite parts of the job.

Neighborhood associations are made up of people who genuinely care about their communities and put in the work every day to make them better. That work matters, and it will always have my support and gratitude.

When the Lan Su Chinese Garden invites you to tour their traditional botanical garden, you say yes. The garden features hundreds of plant species native to China, all surrounding a vivid green pond that will soon be filled with blooming lotus flowers.

Lan Su came to life through Portland’s sister-city relationship with Suzhou, China. Built by artisans from Suzhou, every detail—right down to every stone—was carefully sourced and brought from China to create the garden.

Today, more than 100,000 people visit each year, helping activate Old Town while offering Portlanders and visitors a truly unique cultural experience.

Thanks for having me, the tea was delicious.

This budget process has felt a lot like tower defense. I’m not willing to see Portland reduce shelter capacity, reduce trash pickup, reduce outreach services, and reduce overtime support all in the same year, as some of my colleagues have suggested.

Portland has made real progress over the last few years, and the Public Environment Management Office (PEMO) has been a major part of that success. PEMO must remain funded because it is one of the most effective tools we have for improving everyday life in Portland.

When I need a solution, I go to the Public Environment Management Office (PEMO). PEMO is a team that knows how to coordinate across bureaus so issues don’t bounce around, sticking with a project until the job is done.

PEMO owns the problem, brings the right partners together, and helps stabilize and improve neighborhoods with visible, practical improvements: brighter pedestrian lighting, cleaner sidewalks, activated public spaces, and safer walking routes.

If you want to get involved, PEMO also organizes the Portland Problem Solvers Network, a biweekly forum open to anyone looking to help identify and solve issues in their neighborhood.

Funding PEMO is a priority of mine because they are one of the most effective tools we have for improving everyday life in Portland.

This week, I got my steps in touring the PSU campus, and let me just say, I’ll take a walking tour over a meeting room with bad overhead lighting any day.

The tour highlighted some of PSU’s newest developments, projects still under construction, and the vision for what comes next.

The Portland State Chamber Choir gave us a preview of an upcoming performance and demonstrated just how much acoustics matter. We compared the sound inside a classroom to a stairwell with natural acoustics, and it was a fantastic experience.

I was also really impressed by PSU’s Veterans Resource Center, especially The Mind Spa, a space designed for students to relax and recharge, with a focus on supporting veteran students and their families.

Thanks for having me.

I love seeing progress being made on Darcelle XV Plaza, Portland’s new community space named after the iconic drag queen Darcelle XV, a local legend.

The idea for Darcelle XV Plaza started years ago, long before I was elected, sitting at a bar with a friend and talking about how we could transform a block of downtown that people intentionally avoided into an activated public space for everyone. Now, seeing that idea become reality is incredibly rewarding, and I’m looking forward to opening day this summer.

Special shoutout to Councilor Dan Ryan for listening to my idea and running with it.

I put on a hard hat and toured Gunderson Marine & Iron, a team that truly puts the “port” in Portland.

They recently celebrated a major milestone with a dual vessel launch, sending both the Mt. Rainier and Cordova Provider II into the water at the same time, a first for them and possibly the first in the nation.

Recognize that iconic green steel? Gunderson is also playing a key role in the Abernethy Bridge improvements. When complete, it will be the first earthquake-ready interstate bridge across the Willamette River in the Portland area.

Our city is defined by our neighborhoods, each uniquely Portland in their own way. Much of that is thanks to our neighborhood associations, who advocate for and work to improve their communities.

These are everyday Portlanders giving their time to make their neighborhoods better at a hyper-local level. We should support them in every way we can, because they’re doing the work on the ground and making a difference every day.

Community Warehouse helps turn a new house into a home.

They serve individuals and families working to get back on their feet, providing a dignified shopping experience where people can choose the furniture that fits their space, style, and needs. In a single visit, someone can furnish an entire apartment for $150.

If you have items to donate, consider Community Warehouse. They’ll make sure your items are put to good use within our community, and they can even schedule a pickup for your convenience.

I spent this morning with the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) helping pave Northwest 23rd. The block between Quimby and Pettygrove may officially be the smoothest road in the city.

The machine I operated tears up existing asphalt, recycling about 30% of the material for reuse. Just as impressive, the new asphalt dries fast enough that the newly paved street will be reopened for driving and parking by the end of the day.

PBOT’s experience really shows on projects like this. The crew moves quickly and with purpose. Thanks for the good work you’re doing, PBOT.

Paving on NW 23rd should wrap up by the end of next week.
