SPARK lightning is in the area ahead of the storm front moving in. Please take shelter and precautions, and drive defensively. Never drive through standing water, especially at night. You never know what is now longer underneath you that was there a little bit ago.

Heads up, folks—Mother Nature is doing her thing again. 🌧️

You may have noticed some localized flooding in the downtown area and our parks. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and National Weather Service (NWS), the Grand River is expected to rise another half foot or so before it starts to recede.

While this isn’t unusual for this time of year, it’s a good reminder to stay aware and use a little extra caution:

🚧 Avoid flooded areas – Even shallow water can be deeper (and moving faster) than it looks.
🚗 Turn around, don’t drown – Never drive through water covering the road.
🚶 Use caution on trails and sidewalks – Parks and river paths may be slippery or washed out.
🐾 Keep an eye on kids and pets – Fast-moving water and debris can be dangerous.
🚫 Respect barricades and closures

We’ll continue to keep an eye on conditions and share updates as needed.

GRAND RIVER WATER LEVEL UPDATE

The City of Portland is aware of rising water levels and ice accumulation on the Grand River. City staff are actively monitoring infrastructure and are coordinating with Ionia County Emergency Management and our public safety partners.

We have received reports of minor basement flooding in some buildings adjacent to the Grand River. Weather conditions can change rapidly, and residents are encouraged to take appropriate steps to protect their property and personal safety.

Emergency services will continue to monitor river and ice conditions, as well as upcoming weather forecasts.

Please note that several sections of the Portland River Trail are currently flooded and impassable, including areas near Bogue Flats, Thompson Field, and Two Rivers Park/Bandshell.

12/25/2025

Widespread freezing rain develops late tonight and continues through early to mid afternoon Friday, possibly mixing with rain across southwest MI. A glaze of ice is likely areawide with the potential for some to see up to 0.25" of ice. Plan for hazardous travel Friday due to icy roads.

10/20/2025

Be advised that the Portland Area Fire Authority will be conducting a training exercise on Hyland Drive in coordination with AeroMed.

During this training, a helicopter will be landing in the area.

Please do not be alarmed—this is only a training exercise.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
