About Councilor Dirksen

A long-time public servant and engineer, Councilor Dirksen is passionate about improving transportation options for residents in our region and preventing urban sprawl. For decades, he has advocated for a “Complete Transportation System” that would meet the needs of 21st Century residents—who drive, walk, bike, and take transit.

He supports transportation planning at Metro through several appointments. He currently sits on the Joint Policy Advisory Committee on Transportation (JPACT), which develops transportation plans for our region, and on the Southwest Corridor Steering Committee, which is studying improvements to transit and transportation in Washington County, including a new light rail line.

As gas tax revenues continue to decline due to fuel efficient vehicles, Councilor Dirksen is also committed to finding new ways for our region to pay for roads, bridges, and transit. Governor Brown appointed him to the state’s Road User Fee Task Force, a committee he chairs to help find solutions to this problem.

Prior to his tenure at Metro, Councilor Dirksen served as the Mayor of Tigard for nine years, and as a Tigard City Councilor before that. His career as an industrial designer in the pulp and paper, energy production, and microelectronics industries helped to spur his interest in transportation, and he previously owned a small businesses in Tigard, Oregon X-Treme Electric Bicycles and Scooters.
