The article Tom Hallman has been working on the Club's closure has just been posted on OREGON LIVE. Be listening to OPB Radio as Kristian Foden-Vencil is preparing a four-minute presentation. After talking to myself, Joyce, Handa of the Lake Oswego Club and planning to interview another person I'm hoping they'll decide to give the coverage more time. Tom said it was very difficult to decide what to cover in this article. Hope you like it. I'm grateful to have the contribution of the members to the City of Portland over the years acknowledged. Thank you Tom!

The group faced a dwindling membership as society has changed, with younger people not as interested in joining service clubs.

After 101 years of serving the community and supporting causes around the world, thirteen members of the Kiwanis Club of Portland met for their last meeting today. Interesting that the Club started during the Spanish Flu pandemic. Only a small group of the 100 founding members were able to gather in the Crystal Ballroom at the Benson Hotel to receive the Charter back in 1919. How appropriate that the thirteen of us met on Zoom because of the COVID-19 pandemic going on. For fun, we took a picture with most of us wearing face masks. Going forward, several of us are joining other Kiwanis Clubs, all of us will do service work, and the group will continue to gather together on a regular basis. For those of you who want to know more about Kiwanis and the many clubs that are still active in the Portland area please call the Pacific NW District office at 503-305-7635.

Kiwanis Club of Portland is closing effective September 30, 2020, after more than 100 years of service to the Portland community and beyond. Many of the members have joined other Clubs in the area to continue as part of the Kiwanis family.

If you want to know more about Kiwanis and the Clubs in the area you can attend, please call the District office in Gladstone at 503-305-8303. A friendly person will be there to give you the information you are looking for.

Kiwanis Club of Portland invites you to join us on September 2nd at noon on a Zoom meeting for Nana Goto Bellerud's presentation on "Friendship through Flowers" She will explain how we, with all kinds of diverse backgrounds, can be connected through Ikebana. She has been studying the Sogetsu School of Ikebana for 15 years and continues to be inspired and have new insights from its teachings. Nana demonstrates, exhibits, and teaches ikebana at a wide range of venues including the Portland Art Museum, Portland Japanese Garden, and Leach Botanical Garden. Through her demonstrations and workshops, she seeks to introduce others to the art of ikebana and to intrigue and inspire them.

Join us on Wednesday, August 19th to hear Rev. Michael Ellick, the founder and organizer of a group called “The Common Table” (state-wide faith leaders from different traditions and political perspectives) speak on this new opportunity for people to come together to build relationships and work together across the barriers that normally divide us as a culture.

The project has a statement on their website about systemic racism following the death of George Floyd and the rise of BLM protests. https://www.commontableoregon.org They're about to launch a state-wide curriculum of engagement to help faith traditions grapple with the legacy of racism here in Oregon (the territory was founded to explicitly exclude people of color).

Michael is Director of Public Engagement at Oregon Ecumenical Ministries and heads the Metanoia Peace Community in NE Portland, a Christian ministry to the homeless.

To receive a Zoom link to the meeting please email me at [email protected].

Hope you can join us,
Connie Shipley, KCOP President

I want to share with you what a Kiwanis Club of Portland meeting looks like now. Last month we had Zoom meetings without speakers and got used to the technology. Today we had Alan Cabelly speak on how COVID19 is affecting the workplace. As Governor Cuomo advises New Yorkers to reimagine New York, businesses and organizations and ourselves need to reimagine where we work and how our lives are going to be changed going forward. Thank you Alan for the great presentation. Our next meeting will be May 6th. PM mee if you want to know the Zoom meeting details, Connie Jean Shipley

Go to our website www.kiwanisclubofportland.com to get the meeting number to join us every first, third and fifth Wednesdays of the month. There are three meetings in April so I had to make a new number starting in May. We will get through this!
