Join us for the largest book club on the West Coast!

West Slope Community Library will be hosting a viewing of the Author Talk with George Takei, livestreamed from Los Angeles.

One Book, One Coast is a collaborative program uniting a wide network of West Coast libraries in a shared celebration of literacy, learning, community, and civil discourse. From April 1 through May 31st, all participating libraries will read and discuss They Called Us Enemy by George Takei.

The largest book club on the West Coast wraps up with a special visit from George Takei, author of They Called Us Enemy. We'll be talking to George about the experiences that led to the creation of his memoir, what it means to be a good neighbor and citizen in the face of overwhelming challenges, and how shared books and stories build stronger communities.

George Takei is a renowned civil rights activist, social media icon, Grammy-nominated recording artist, New York Times bestselling author, and pioneering actor whose career has spanned over six decades. Best known for his role as Hikaru Sulu in Star Trek, Takei has appeared in more than 40 feature films and hundreds of television episodes. He has leveraged his public profile to champion social justice, LGBTQ+ rights, and marriage equality.

Takei’s advocacy is deeply personal. As a child during World War II, he and his family were among the 125,000 Japanese Americans unjustly imprisoned in U.S. incarceration camps—a formative experience that shaped his lifelong commitment to civil rights and public service.

They Called Us Enemy is a graphic memoir recounting actor/author/activist George Takei’s childhood imprisoned within American concentration camps during World War II. Confronting questions of patriotism, family, loyalty, and community, George’s work is a stunning examination of what it means to be American, both then and now.

We are delighted to announce that we are now selling Garden Home & West Slope Community Library mugs! $15 each for these staff-designed cuties, available for purchase at the checkout desk. Here are some things our mug can do:

⭐Hold your coffee or tea. (Or any beverage, really. Who are we to limit you to two options? You want to drink salted lemonade out of this thing, go for it.)
⭐Spend some time in the microwave.
⭐Run laps in the microwave.
⭐Hang onto your pens and pencils until you are ready to use them.
⭐Serve as a friendly, if unconventional reading companion.
⭐Look stunning in the garden.

Conversely, here are some things our Library mug cannot do:
⚫Write an essay for you.
⚫ Walk your dog.
⚫Return your library books on time. (It is always happy to come along, though!)
⚫There are many other things our mug cannot do; it’s just a mug after all. Please temper your expectations.

In conclusion: Proceeds from our mug sales will help support Garden Home & West Slope Community Libraries, and although we cannot guarantee it, there is a fair chance it may also bring measurable joy to your life. 🌈☕📚

A gentle reminder for those looking to downsize their home libraries, and donate the surplus to us:
Please DON’T leave donated items in (or outside of, as seen here) our book drops. We appreciate the thought, but our Garden Home location cannot currently accept donated items, and leaving them outside risks them being destroyed by the elements.
Please DO donate up to one grocery-sized bag of books, games, or DVDs directly to a staff person at West Slope Community Library. See our website for donation guidelines, as well as other ways you can contribute to Garden Home & West Slope Community Libraries.
Thank you for your support!
